I drove our 4.5 petrol 80 series through a water crossing about 2 foot deep and although we made it out,it promptly stopped apon reaching dry land.Funnily enough, the 60 series traveling behind us did exactly the same thing. In hindsight I may have drove a little quickly, but certainly not "fast".Anyway I sprayed some rp7 under the bonnet on the dizzy and electrical plugs and 2 minutes later it was away.I have only had the vehicle a couple of months and this is the first time I have put it through water.I was a bit dissapointed as the vehicle it replaced,a 92 v6 4runner,was impervious to water.I once hit a floodway at night just outside Boulia, still with water in it from rain days before. The 4 runner hit that hard water went right over the top and i could not see for about 4 seconds, but it did not miss a beat.Is there any common 80 series problem or have I maybe just got a bodgy plug somewhere.
Thankyou,
Andrew

I have seen other petrol cruisers suffer the same fate. i helped a german couple that failed to negotiate the King edward river that A Diesal freelander sneezed at. The problem is the fan chucks water over the motor causing dampness to the electricals. It sounds like the floodway you hit in the 4 runner wasnt deep enough to reach the fan

Don't know specifics on that motor but aren't the plugs well down in a recess on the rocker cover? If they are then the water is probably sitting around the plugs causing probs.

considering you drove through 2 feet of water , i would say that this is probably your issue , one is that you must be driving a bling bling lo rider , or you crossed so fast that you slashed water everywere , i have had my 80 in water crossings up to the bonnet and never has a issue . If you drive at the right speed , a bow wave will form about a meter infront of the bonnet , anything deep , put a tarp accross the nose , this will also stop you fan screwing into the radiator

Been thru plenty of water in ours and never had your problem. I suggest that your comment "In hindsight I may have drove a little quickly" could be the reason it happened.

Mine used to same though "enthusiastic" driving usually problem but- Michael at Suburban 4wd told me a trick that he does on these motors that anyone can so.

Buy air mattress pump
Find somewhere on passenger side under dash to mount it
Run large clear airline from pump to distributer
Drill hole in cap (take it off first)
Stick hose in hole, silicone around hose to seal
Have switch for pump near driver

Hit the switch before you enter water and no more coughing or stalling. The bit of extra pressure in dizzy keeps water/steam out. He told me of situation where bloke (competition) found himself stalled in middle of water as he forgot to turn pump on. Turned pump on for a bit and engine started!

Works for me

Cheers
Matt

TIP:

1. water proof your dissy & provide a pigtail so the water cant get in but it can still breath
2. ensure that the plug sockets are seated onto the head properly, or you'l get water down the plug recess (& its a bugger to get out)
3. if it is pre 95 & backfires, you will do an airflow meter (& a wad of cash)
4. slower thru the water

Been there!
