hi polar here posted a querry couple of months ago as to how to go about this well I have done it gearbox bolts straight up to 1hz naturally asperated diesel you dont have to change the flywheel if you dont want to(will save you approx $600 bigger flywheel clutch ect.) genuine toyota clutch plate part no. 31250-36492 has the same coarse spline in 275 mm diamater as the shaft on the hdj79 box as for the electronic speedo just remove the whole insert replace it with 80 series fits straight in the hole rear tailshaft has to be shortened 100mm . A small cut out (40x40mm) has to be made in the inspection plate covering the box (inside the cab )so you can get all the gears. hzj 75 gearbox frame mounts are the go get them from the wreckers bolt up the crossmember jack into position an weld not really a big job. I left my origional frame mounts on. anyone got any Questions post a follow up

Sounds like an interesting project, but one has to wonder why? Having owned 2 (hj75, now hzj75) and know of several others having high kms. with NO gearbox probs. at all (except have heard of the oilseal, box.-T/case issue).
Seems to me the lower ratio 5th. gear ratio is a detraction, not an advantage?
Any major reason for the change over?

hi polar here. hzj75 boxes have several week points output shaft gear stripping. Jumping out of 5th. Gearbox to tranfer seal. Idler gear wearing prematuraly. The h151f is a much stronger better designed box.

Hi polar,

I agree the larger gearbox is better than the older 5 speeds. An internal oil pump is another advantage that I believe the H55f is lacking.

I've been planning to do a similar gearbox conversion into my 1HDT powered HJ75. I have an H150f gearbox mated to its transfer from an HZJ80 which I believe also uses the same transfer as the HDJ79. My question is whether there was enough room in front of the tubular crossmember and the fuel tank to fit the larger gearbox and transfer. As it is, there is little space (less than 5 cm if I recall) between the original transfer and the crossmember. How much space do you have between the crosmember and the transfer after you've done your conversion?

I also have concerns about the shifter location in the HZJ80 transfer. By my measurements, the shifter would enter the cabin under the bench seat, which makes changing to bucket seats mandatory for me. I believe the shifter in the HDJ79 is placed closer to the gearbox shifter?

Would you happen to have pictures of the gearbox before it was installed?

Cheers,
Dave

hi dave .The distance between the back of the transfer case and the tubular crossmember part of the frame (installed) is 40mm in a 1994 cruiser ute this does not seem possible when you measure it up on the ground before installation. But you have to remember the protruding section flange ect goes under the tubular crossmember the flange lines up right in the centre of the recess (beside the fuel tank )just 100mm further back. As for the transfer lever position (fits right in the middle of the origional recess) has 450 mm rod that runs backwards to the pickup point and lever itself is bolted to the gearbox housing just behind the bellhousing unfortunately didnt take any photo!s of box uninstalled. If you tranfer case is a HF2A it will fit with the right linkage any Further Questions just ask. CHEERS POLAR
