Folks
I take delivery of my new CT tomorrow just in time for the long weekend and have just realised that my current insurance thru Aust 4WD Insurance only covers trailers to $500 and that is only when it is attached to the vehicle. What have others done to cover their CTs against the unforssen dangers tha exist??
TIA

I am taking delivery of my CT over the next two weeks and I will be insuring with AAMI. As I have other insurance with AAMI the quote was the most competitive that I could find. In terms of the cover I am covered for theft, accidental and storm damage;whether attached to my vehicle or not. The policy also covers for $500 contents insurance, which from memory can not be increased.

Hi all,
We are with Wesfarmers Federation Insurance, along with the farm insurance, covered I think for about $10k (we set this) on or off the vehicle I think.

Jonesy, Coincidentally I have just done some checking on the insurance on my own CT. Most coys treat them similar to a caravan but the main thing to watch is that the amount you insure for is an actual agreed value and not the lesser of agreed value or market value. Some will tell you it is agreed value but it is subject to what the actual market value is when the claim happens. This is difficult with CTs as there are so many different breeds and if there haven't been too many secondhand sales before you have your claim who can say what it is worth? I paid about $340 to insure mine for $18000 including $1000 of conts plus a frige listed separately. It is covered on or off the vehicle and includes such things as storm and theft. Most car insurers will either add it to your car policy or do it as a separate policy. Ask for a copy of their Product Disclosure Statement (policy) and you have a min 14 days after you buy it to change your mind and get your money back if you dont like it.

Took delivery of my C/T 2 weeks ago ( top camper top service but that can wait for a later post). The best deal for insurance i got ( in WA) was HBF around $290 for $15000 agreed value.

Can't recall costs etc but basically my RACQ insurance covers for agreed value for the camper plus $500 contents when being towed or when parked up..

As far as the contents they are only covered when the camper is locked as when the tent is opened up the items are at too much risk.

Hope that makes sense!

Thanks for the advise. I have returned and will do something about it soon. Do you think that $500 for trailor contents is enough??

Depends.

The majority of my gear is covered under my household insurance , so $500 is plenty.

I'm also with NRMA which has that $500 contents.

Would that mean that you unload it when you get home and store all your gear in the shed??
I was thinking that when you add up poles, pegs, tarps, cookers, jerry cans, wet weather gear, battery, solar panel (gotta be over $500) not to mention clothes and food, you go well over. I keep most of the stuff in the CT except clothes and food and its locked up in the back yard. I think I am most likely to need insurance when I am away from home and don't think my house hold insurance would cover it being nicked from the bush??

Should of said "don't think my house hold insurance would cover gear" and not "it", and it'd make more sense.

Sure , thats the difference.

All that sundry stuff , may or may not be $500. I would probably accept $500 for it.

Things get more complicated with , your solar panel etc. My Fridge, Lappy etc , are covered by my Home Insurance , as is clothes etc (AFAIK).

Of course , if your Home insurance DOESN'T cover it , either , get one that does , or , get good CT insurance. TCIS did the best policy for that.
