I had A problem with the intercooler of my 2004 patrol, and xtrail, they both leak oil from the part inbetween the fins ogf the intercooler and the smooth , ?I was wondering if the dtronic could cause this on my patrol, the dealer told me it was an increse of preassure of the turbo(maybe the dtronic caused this, but the xtrai doesn do it.
From the side you can see the central part of the intercooler where the fins are(where the air goes through to get cold) you can see the oil leaking, and in the bottom too .
I think it is a bad intercooler not the dtronic

It would have been wiser to remove the Dtronic before contacting the dealer about the turbo.
Remove the Dtronic and try again with a different dealer.

In other words Squizzy, try to get Nissan to fix problems that you caused. Surely they cause enough problems themselves without having others cause more!!

I'm not suggesting that the Dtronic caused the problem, I'm only suggesting that you don't give Nissan any reasons to void warranties.

must be the only one in existance, cause xtrails dont have turbos or intercoolers.

Gee, guess who this would be posting....

Turbo diesel X trail is available overseas as a 2.2 L putting out 100 kw of power and 314nm of torque and getting fuel cons figures between 6.2 to 9 lper/100 or 45.6 mpg to 31.4 mpg

I talked to the dealer and told me that the xtrail had this problem and they will change it when the factory sends a reinforced intercooler and a new air mass sensor.

About the patrol, they told me they wouldnt change it because I modified the car but I argued with them ( Im a good client) I have purchased 10 cars from them (4 patrols, 4 pickups, 1 xtrail,1 bluebird) so they now me well , and they told me they will replace it in guarantee

Also Im sorry you guys dont get the diesel xtrail, this car is a bullet and in spain they sell the xtrail with the new 2.5tdi engine from the frontier(and pathfinder) with about 160 hp
it feels like a petrol car( actually faster than many reaches 185km has six speed to reduce rpms at high velocity

Xtrails come in diesel - 2.2L @ 84kw & 100kw - but not locally delivered in Oz.

Oil leaking from the intercooler core is a result of a leaky intercooler. have it replaced.

It is normal to have some oil residue in the induction system, as it is from the rocker cover / PVC. EXCESSIVE oil is a sign of failed turbo seals, or failed piston rings or bore glazing.

My BIL has had his intercooler replaced because it was weeping a small amount of oil. He doesn't have a dtronic fitted either. I would always remove your dtronic before going to a nissan dealer as they may make a note of it and void future warranty claims.

Wonder why oil is getting into an intercooler?
The turbo draws air through the air filter/inlet, compresses it then discharges to the inlet manifold/combustion chamber.
It would seem that the only way this area could be contaminated with oil is if the turbo oil sealing is shot or excessive blowby from piston ring leakage is forcing oil through the crankcase breather pipe into the tubo inlet duct.
Either way, not a good scenario, engine could end up running on its own oil. (lookout, abandon ship!)
If mine, would be seriously concerned.

Kesh, agreed. When my turbo on my 4.2 GU started a small oil leak, Nissan replaced it (and then another) under warranty. ie, there should be no oil coming from the bearings of the turbo, either dripping out, or delivered thru the ducting.

I agree. I don't think it sounds good. There was another thread and i can't find it and it was mentioned a very small amount was acceptable. My BIL wouldn't of noticed a crack in the intercooler otherwise.

my intercooler is leaking (no ditronic) so i took the pipes off to check it out. Inside of cooler & pipes has a liberal coating of oil, which is enough to run out through the pin holes in the shizen intercooler.. Some diesel experts say its ok for the turbo to push some oil up there & some say not OK. I think not. Am getting it checked out on monday. Have been told that the turbo on this model is a throwaway unit when stuffed. 10/2001 model 86,000km

My mech recons most turbo's push oil out. If I remember correctly, his words were...."build a bridge and get over it muzz!!"

I have read many complaints on here that the intercooler in the 3.0 patrol is a piece of crap.

its the infamous 3.0lt gu. Its been a great truck for me, until this week.
And muzz, I probably could build a bridge over the river of oil that flows out my intercooler!!

Most turbos will bypass a bit of oil & it doesn't take much to make a mess of intake manifolds (always looks worse than it is),and most time you will not notice a drop in the level on your dipstick, but if as you say it is actually leaking out of the intercooler, you have a serious problem with turbo seals leaking.
As to your other questions, use the recomended oil & filters(or good quality aftermarket) for the motor. Even some of the largest engine manufacturers sometimes have seal problems. Cat have had a run of turbo problems on their new C15 550 hp engine lately
