The Ngarkat Conservation Park Management Plan discusses the closure of
the Border Track;

'As access along the northern portion of the track is one way (north
to south), and there are few opportunities to leave the track, during
a fire visitors may be forced to drive directly into a fire front.
Those attempting to avoid this by traversing the track from south to
north may become bogged and/or sustain damage to their vehicle. This
combination of factors also increases the difficulty of search and
rescue operations.

To ensure public safety, DEH will not permit public access along the
Track from 1 November to 31 March and during periods of high fire
danger (as determined by the District Ranger).'

Barrier gates have now been installed on the track and last summer was
the first time they were used to closed track for this reason.

True - have official document here with details (67 pages). However, it also mentions a new track (previously closed) to be opened to 4WD during open season.

For those that have asked me for more info on this - the new track is not currently open and as a result of phone calls placed on Friday we understand that they don't have a definitie date or any idea when it will open - something to do with waiting for dunes to stabilise and then the construction of a lookout? Anyway, the track is the old one that runs from the northen border, through Box Flat and links with the Jimmys Well track. They state in the document that they believe that opening this track will remove pressure from other tracks and reduce pulic track degradation. They also talk of opening other tracks (but only on an exclusive basis, with a limited number of fee paying visitors permitted at any one time).

That ignorant SA park ranger has put another nail in the coffin of the small country towns in the area. Closed for the busiest time for 4x4 tourists who would have spent thousands of dollars in food, accomodation & fuel.
In the 20 years I've travelled the Border track the biggest damage I've seen was caused by the bulldozers clearing the huge fire breaks. The minor track damage caused by 4 wheel drives fades into insignificance in comparison.
With the main attraction of the Big Desert area closed to 4x4s, travellers will no doubt go elsewhere for a challenge & leave the Ranger to count his burnt out mallee stumps alone ;-)
Cheers Craig............

Trevv88,

Also have a look at Post 207044 for more background on this. The local ranger will have the place shut up on the basis of some of the flimsyest excuses ever dreampt up.

Seems that the info above is slightly in error, as the actual date is 15 Nov 05.

The track was open over the Cup Weekend.

Based on the 7 or so vehicles I seen churning up one sand hill without getting over its not hard to understand some rangers decisions. ALL the vehciles I seen except one should have made it over (as my TD & the LR TD5 did easily).

I guess we had pressures approaching 18PSI and the Navara's, LR Disco V8, 2005 Hilux, Patrol TD etc all had too high tyre pressures (even for AGRESSIVE MT to be any asistance).

Its this type of 'driver' that creates the problem. The ranger just reacts to the damage. BTW they all from the 'big smoke', so its not their backyard that gets closed.
