Hi all, has anybody ever replaced the o ring (very large) that goes on the lid of the air filter canister. My'n seems to have flattened out a bit I would say due to age 16 years and wondering where else you could get a new one for it. Just rang toyota can only buy the clips that hold the lid on brand new or the whole cannister it's self, at a cost of $560.00 cost price through my mate. Toyota do not sell the seal seperately. Am going away soon and will be doing a few river crossings and just want to be sure. Has any body ever had a problem with these leaking due to age. I havn't had a problem with it but checked the air filter the other day and didn't seem to have the tension that it used to . The clips look fine. Last thing I want is to injest any
water into the motor 2.8 diesel. I do have a
snorkel but no good if it sucks it through the cannister lid. Is there any other way to test the seal. Regards Vitara

If the seal is still intact - I'd first try bending the clips a little to try and create the tension that way - you might find that you can get a few more K's out of the seal.
The other thing to try is the wreckers of course - I'd imagine there'd be a few of those air box's floating around - as I don't think they changed that particular air box throughout quite a few model changes.
To my knowledge, I don't think there is any true way to test the seal - best to simply check each seal as you are currently doing. The other seal to check on the 2.8 as far as air goes - is the flexible hose connecting into the inlet manifold - this was very loose on
mine - I had to modify the screw clamp so it could clamp smaller.

Thanks for that I believe that they were the same right up to 97. Will double check the clips first then will hunt one down at the wreckers. I still cant believe that they are not available seperately as new. Regards Vitara

Vitara
Check recent Q"s by Roachie.
Roachie posted a similar question just recently, although his was a oil related issue.
Replies suggested that you can buy lenghts of this rubber to cut and make your own with a glue that will bond the rubber to make the "O" ring.
Maybe Clark Rubber will have the gear in their store, or direct you somewhere else.
Cheers

Thanks for that. Might be worth doing that first before I try the wreckers. At least then I know it will be
well sealed. Regards Vitara

Mate, I'd just get some good quality silicone and put a smooth portion of it around the seal. Let it dry then whack it back on, it'll be better than new! Just make sure you make it even so there are no gaps, that's where the "good" silicone comes into play, some cheap stuff you by is almost imposible to work with, good quality stuff will be easy to smooth out and shape.

Hi Vitara,
Have you thought about re-arranging your intake system? Maybe putting in a different type of system, eg Donaldson
