With a lot of threads on inverters and issues that relate to them with laptops. What is wrong with a cheap power pack available on ebay at $25.00 to $45.00? See Ebay items 8709818623 or 6813551469 these are variable voltage and will run off 12 volts to run a laptop.

Nothing wrong at all with these units if all you want to do is run a laptop. A proper inverter will give you 240 volts and let you run more gadgets :-))

Beware of the cheap ones as they may not filter any spikes etc out of the power.
Best to use a good power 12v supply from the laptop manufacurer or one of the Kerio branded ones.
A specific power supply is much more efficient than an inverter and no 240v (that can kill!) in the car.

Try the Jaycar one for about $90.

I use it on my Toshiba Tecra S1 and it's rated to about 6 amps from memory.

Has done the Canning, Cape York and the Oodnadatta allowing dvd for kids and photos to be dumped off Cards.

Helps with geocaching too if you can carry your laptop.

traveller2 is right, using a dedicated 12v accessory is far more efficient that running an inverter to do the same thing. Less cables too.

I had a cheap 12V voltage rectifier for the lappy, but it caught fire on a trip earlier this year, so I changed to a 12V - 240V inverter. The inverter gives a much cleaner power supply, and has not caused my lappy to reboot like the rectifier used to.
The inverter now enables me to recharge the mobile phone and the digital camera and video batteries as well as run the laptop. I have heard that this is an inefficient way do things, but I have found that the inverter filters out voltage spikes and hence provides 'cleaner' power for electronic devices.

Personally, I wouldn't trust my laptop with something so cheap from eBay. I use a Kingston which does 240 or 12 v to a variety of power "nipples" including one for my CBs as well. V good. At $250, it is pricey tho.
