We have a 4.8 TI Nissan Patrol (2002) and wish to replace either the main or sub fuel tank with larger capacity. At present our Main tank holds 90 ltrs, the sub tank 40ltrs, and have been told we can replace the main which would then hold 146 ltrs or the sub 76 ltrs. Has anyone had any problems with a modification of this kind? Our Nissan dealer said this was possible but that it might cause problems with the fuel pumpand outlet etc therefore would not be their concern? which we understand anyway. Any feedback would be most appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Jinki,

Have one and did that in 2002. That is a 146 ltr main replacement and retained the sub (the best price I could get for the sub last year was something in the vicinity of $900 - too expensive). I have had no problems at all, the only issue is that the sender now reads full for a lot longer. Had it done by the dealer who had it done by ARB (longranger tank) and have a compliance plate fitted.

Kind regards

Mines a 4.5 Ti , but, essentially the same.

I was told the chnage in the subtank to a 85l can be done, and is a better idea for weight distribution, then the larger 140 odd l main tank.

Apparently the 85l sub is a common change when adding LPG , which is what I'm looking at , at present.

I haven't heard of any concerns in regards to changing tanks from either the LPG guys , or , the LR Petrol guys.

Quick Question Flappa.

How can upgrading the sub tank be better than the main tank weight distribution wise? The main tank sits evenly across the back of your car there for in theory even weight distribution. The Sub tank runs down the drivers side of the car there for wouldn't the weight now be more on one side of the car than the other?

Just a question not a dig mate.

As I said ,I was "told" . . . not being an engineer , I dn't have a particuler reason other then being "told" its better to have it between the wheels , even offset, then having it behind the wheels ?

I believe you HAVE done the changes though , so , if its BS , then who am I to argue.

Fair enough,

As I said it wasn't a dig I was just curious to the reasoning that's all.

I have a 2002 4.8 lt auto and have the ARB 146 lt. main tank. I have done the Simpson and Anne Beadell and have not had any problems. It was fitted before the warranty ran out and the dealer did not have a problem! I have not noticed any handling change with the extra weight. I have a Rancho 2'' (50 mm) lift kit with 9000 shocks.

Jinki,

I have a done all the fuel tank upgrades available to my 4500 ST Patrol and have had no dramas at all. When I first got the car it had a 146 ltr Long Range tank running with standard fuel pump. No problems. I then put LPG on and took the long range tank out all together. I sold this so I could purchase an upgrade on the sub tank from 40 ltr to 85 ltr and again no problems at all. It is a pretty easy upgrade with relatively no problems (that I have Found) upgrading either tank.
Just a word though I was quite surprised how much it cost to upgrade the sub tank as apposed to the main tank which holds more.

Hope this helps.

The forum is getting soft...

I have a LC - the long range tanks come as standard!

Ah, things just aren't the same without a bit of sledging!

The Nissan has two tanks as well, but some of us replace the 90lt main tank with a bigger one.
