I always have an EPIRB in the 4wd, I have mounted it to the cargo barrier. I see many vehicles around with crap bumpers stickers, suction capped signs on the windows. Some are very useful like "Baby on Board" in a case of accidents.
I wanted to know if anyone has got, seen or knows where to buy something like "EPIRB on Board". I am thinking for worst case scenario if both Kir and I are injured and another traveller comes acorss us with out an EPIRB. The EPRIB has full instructions with it and yes i am relying on who knows what it is.
cheers
Crazie

The someone who knows what it is and what it's worth may just decide that they need it in their vehicle more than you do.
Kind of why my window has a sticker reading "
HF radio PIN protected"

You're not lost if a motorist comes along and maybe you would be better off if they tried the mobile phone/s first, or your/their radio, or got help otherwise.
Even the 406 MHz
beacon can only locate to an approximate 5 km radius. It takes time to process and set up search etc.
I think your
sign would attract thieves.
Am I missing something?

ev I think I'm missing it too. Haven't the rescuers already arrived if someone is there to set it off?
Best case scenario if you're unconscious & someone came along, set off your epirb to get the Emergency
services to repsond would need to wait minimum 5 hours (possibly 2 days) to get rescue under way & find you then a further 2 hours to get you to a Morgue because more likely than not you will have already passed away particually if you were that beat up you couldn't flick a switch.
I think many place too much faith in epirbs in thinking that a helicopter is sitting there waiting ready to rescue them from the most remote
places in OZ should something go wrong. It's far more important to make preparations to look after yourself & get your own help. Radio's & phones will give instant communication with the emergency
services so they can be directed quickly to the scene without wasting their recourses (& our taxpayer $$$).
As for the sticker I'm sorry but I think they don't produce them anywhere because there are not that many insecure & paranoid 4 wheel drivers around to buy them.
As you can see I'm not a big fan of epirbs as I reckon they're one of the most useless assessory carried in a 4x4, best left for boat users ;-))
Cheers Craig..........

G'dat Crazie
I carry an EPIRB and flares. The claim on the GME one I have reckons you can be located within 5-10 KMS. So if I heard (or saw) an aircraft I would set off the flare,
Smoke flare also indicates wind direction for aircraft.
Any signshop would be able to make a sticker up for you, and as far as the light-fingered brigade out there, they probably wouldn't know what EPIRB means.

I had a laminated notice inside on the sun visor telling where the EPIRB and flares were, but need to have a letting off ceremony as the flares are just out of date now. Just in case someone is in a position but disoriented indside the cabin.

wouldn't you be better off carrying it on your belt so its with you when you go for a walk, or so you can actually reach it in the case of an accident. if you stack the car and can't get out how are you gonna reach the cargo barrier???

I think that the EPIRB (or PLB if you have upgraded) should be on you not the vehicle. Worst case scenario - alone on an isolated track and vehicle catches fire. Now you are in the middle of nowhere with no supplies, no comms, no hope. But you did have an EPIRB or PLB, which is now burning merrily along with the rest of your gear. Makes you feel a lot better having it!
RIP
So if you are going to have one, put it on yourself - it's not the vehicle that needs rescuing.
Just my opinion etc etc

Hay Crazie.
I thought the concept of an EPIRB on board the 4by was reasonable.
Can also be used if you happen to go bush walking or put the tinnie in the
water.
Don't know about the
sign though.
I also take my faithfull dog Lassie when we go bush. That way if the EPIRB fails I can just tell Lassie to go get help :-)
Have a good weekend.
Regards

We carry an Epirb, flares and boat V sheet -
bright orange and only becuase we have one that is needed for the boat and may as
well be with us in the deserts rather than locked in the boat at home.
Also have CB and GSM + CMDA Mobiles.

Maybe a good idea
EPIRB on Board
(and underneath)
If you break into this vehicle an alarm signal is sent to the closest Police Vehicle!
Hope you are not worried about our desert excursion in 2006?
I will look after ya...promise
