Hi All Can anyone help me ?
I am fitting an antenna for the mobile phone, the antenna currently has a mini UHF plug. I need to replace it with a crimp type FME female line connector (which I have). Have never done one before, and not sure about pin connection to coax and then insertion into the plug. Have looked through a few electronic stores web sites looking for data, but no luck ! Can anyone help ?
Thanks in advance
Neil.

You need the appropriate crimping tool. At about $50 bucks it's probably cheaper to go down to the local car stereo installer and be charged $10 bucks for a five min. job.

I've had this done in two cars. Each time I went to Brisbane Car Sound and both times they charged me $10 to do it. First time it was just to fit the connector I already had and the second time it was supply and fit.

I know Jaycar sells the connectors but not the tool to crimp them with.

Jaycar do flog a crimping tool (CAT. NO. TH1840) that will do the job. I ended up purchasing one for this exact reason - to crimp on an FME connector. If its only a one off use for the crimper tool, probly cheaper to get it done at a car stereo place, but I will use mine again (you can purchase different interchangeable dies for different jobs). Other than that, its just a matter of exposing enough of the core to feed into the receiver pin (only enough for the bottom end of the pin else the other connector wont fit), then crimping the pin onto the end of the core wire, then just assembling the plug (making you sure you put the metal sleeve on first, then just ram the sleeve up onto the plug and crimp the sleeve. Seeing as the connectors are cheap, i bought one to practice on first.

Is that reasonably new? Jaycar told me they didn't sell them when I tried to buy one.

Not that new. I bought mine about 4 months ago if not longer. And I would imagine its been around for a lot longer than that. It doesn't specifically say it can crimp FME, but the bloke at the Jaycar I went to pulled one out of the packet and we measured up the sleeve and it was the right size die for the job. he said if it didn't work, I could return it anyway. I've since been back to purchase an additional die for some other crimp work.
