I have a new Waeco cf50 It cools perfectly but the error light flashes all the time. It has only been run on 12 volts so far. Anyone had this problem?

i just bought a new CF60 and am rapidly learning about power supply for fridges. Slow flashing of the red light says your voltage is too low fas as I recall from the destructions. Regardless of your power arrangements, the voltage at the fridge's inlet plug, when running, is what matters. 1.
Check that you have the low voltage cutout all the way to the left (10.5V). 2. You may need larger capacity wiring from the battery to your fridge - voltage drop was my problem and I'm working through that issue now. From my reckoning, the bloody Waeco power cable loses near on half a volt in itself - not good.

There is an "error type" dependind on the number of times the error light flashes.
ie a no. of flashes then a delay then a no. of flashes again.
5 flashes - Thermal Cut-Out. The refrigeration system is too heavily loaded or the ambient temp is too high.
4 flashes - Minimum Motor Speed. The refrigeration system is too heavily loaded, the motor speed cannot maintain minimum speed - approx 1800rpm.
3 Flashes - Motor Start Error. The rotor is locked or the differential pressure in the refrigeration system is too high(>5 bar).
2 Flashes - Fan Over Current Cut Out. The fan is loads the electronic unit with more than 1A.
1 Flash - Battery Protection Cut Out. The voltage is outside the cut out setting.
This should help you into which area to look at.
It is most likely voltage drop that others have covered.

Neil

Dazza, I have a Waeco, as does my brother in law. I am sure you will find that there is an earthing problem. If you read the instruction Waeco manual closely it says to earth the fridge directly back to the negative pole of the battery. Many people earth the negative power lead to the chassis or frame of the vehicle. This can work in some cased if the contacts between all parts of the vehicle are very good, but it depends how efficient the the connection is between the earth wire of the fridge back to the actual battery negative post.
I have two recent esamples:
(1) I had a fridge in the rear of my hilux which had an aluminium tray. I brought the positive from the battery to the fridge plug and connected the negative direct to the frame of the tray instead of wasting extra wire right back to the battery. It worked initially, but the voltage dropped from about 12.7 to 11 volts under load. This is because aluminium is not a very good conducter, particularly where it joins the steel chassis. After returning the negative lead direct to the battery as per the manual, it worked perfectly.
(2) I recently went to the
Birdsville races with my brother in law and his fridge red light kept flashing like yours when on 12 volt
battery power. His system was installed by a professional!!! I discovered an identical problem to my own previous experience, in that his earth was connected to his tray which obviously did not earth properly back to the battery negative post. To
test my theory I just connected a battery jumper lead from where the earth lead met the tray direct to the battery negative post, which was fairly close and it then worked perfectly with no flashing lights.
If I were a betting man I would ...............
