Can anyone sugest some nice camping spots on Fraser Island. I am coming home for December and we are going to go up there and spend a week there. We like to rough it so we don't need showers or toilets. I normaly like camping right on the beach. I have never camped on Fraser but have done a a couple of day tours there a couple of years ago so I am not no sure where what is.

Thanks

Troll,

It was a long time ago now (1992) but we camped at Dundaburra(spelling) about half way up the east coast.

This gave us a fairly central base from which to explore the island.

We were there early December, outside school hols and it was wonderful. There were only two other groups in the campground and they were a long way from us and quiet.

The only draw back for us was that we cought the last barge from Rianbow and we got to the campsite a little late in the day. Naturally we had the opposite problem on the way home.

Depends what you are after.
We were up there a couple of weeks ago and the pick of the places we stayed was Central Station. It is inland, about 10km from from Eurong and about 8KM from Lake McKenzie and Lake Birrabeen. Beautiful spot in the forest. Excellent camp sites, level and well separated by trees. Terrific facilities and a 6 minute hot shower for $1. We were there just after the school holidays and it was less than 25% full.
Plenty of other good spots elsewhere as well.

There are lots of places to "rough it", try to find a place that is sheltered from the wind. I once made the mistake of camping with a fantastic view of the ocean from my C/T, the only problem was the wind.

North of Waddy Point, up near Ocean Lake. Good camp spots and not as exposed as south of Indian Head.

Cheers ........

Hi Troll 81, We have been going up there for years and we always found that camping somewhere between Eurong and Happy Valley really good. Just make sure that you are protected from the wind etc. Also, I would recommend that you don't camp directly on the beach as at Christmas time there is usually king tides which sometimes come right up. Also, the department of forestry has just started zoning the beach, which means you need a special camping permit to camp at this spot. They have started with zoning "One Tree Rocks" which is right near Eurong. The zoning goes for 2.2km from Eurong. I don't think that many people know about this as it isn't all booked yet for the Christmas period etc. You can ring up and book it now and you are sure to get a campsite at such a crazy time of year to go!!
