Hi all,
I am currently think about purchasing a small boat to take with us when we go
camping near
water (
Murray River, Eildon, Gippsland Lakes, Barwon River). The reality is that we would only use the boat 6-7 times a year. It would need to be able to carry 4 people. I'm thinking of a small aluminium tinny around 4 meters with a suitable size motor (25-30HP). Budget would be up to $6,000, but I would prefer to spend less! I've never owned a boat, however I am licensed.
This is similar to what I've been considering

Some of the questions I have that I'm hoping you can answer is.
Could a boat this size be use to tow a child in a tube?
Could this size boat be carried on the Roof Rack of a Patrol if I wanted to go without the trailer?
Anything other suggestions or tips?
Thanks in advance

For roof top carrying 3.6 to 3.8 is about the maximum you would require.
To lift on the roof of your Patrol you would need an over roof track system due to the height.
!5 hp would send this size boat along quite smartly and tow a child if required, not many cartop boats can take much more HP than this safely.(you could possibly go to 20hp but check boat compliance plate)
Also do not forget you have to lift the motor on and off the car and boat.
My rig is a Nissan Patrol with a stacer 3.6 and 15 hp Evirude.

For almost exacly the same use I ended up with a $2K inflatable with 15HP outboard. I carry it on the roof with the motor fitted to a Kayar rear wheel carrier.
Carries 4, tows a tube, can be launched single handed. Dont need a
boat ramp. Relatively cheap.

Where do you get an inflatable for $2000 - any of the ones I have looked at have been far more than that?
Thanks

Was advertised in the club magazine of the 4WD club I am a member of. Second hand of course. Boat, motor and enclosed
water safety gear. All for $1,800.00.

Silly question, but where do you connect the rope for the tube?
Is it too much of a P.I.T.A carrying on the roof?

The rope connects to the tow hooks on the transom where that outboard also fits. Pretty much the same set up as many boats.

I wanted to avoid a trailer. No where to
park it, extra set of wheels/bearings to maintain, extra rego. Boat is 3.35ME long and fits on the 60's roof OK. A trailer would be easier in some respects but I didn't want one. Boat will also deflate and fit in the back in a bag. I have an engine driven compressor so reinflating it isn't a problem.
I can keep up with the ferries on
Sydney harbour (top speed is 22 Knots) and have a lot of fun with the kids plus it is great for bass fishing on a fly. Oysters are a problem, but being able to "bump" into things without fenders is a plus.

Hi Phil,
I have a 3.7 tinny with a new 15 HP motor. The thing flies !. Plenty there for tube riding for small kids. Nice and light for when you go out alone too. Takes 4 people with ease. I havent tried putting it on roof of my GQ YET.....but i have thought about it for that
camping trip along a river somewhere when your not sure if the trailer will get in. I know it will fit on the roof though as i have seen the exact same boat on an 80 series. As suggested above, you will need the mechanical loader to get it up there. Bit of a hand full otherwise.
Cheers Ange

Hi Phil,
we have a 3.75m Quintrex dart with a 15hp Honda o/b. The Quinnie goes up on top of the GU patrol with ease (no boat loader) and the o/b hanges on one side of the dual wheel carrier. We recently swapped to a fold-up trailer which mounts on the caravan drawbar. Its all prety easy actually. Can't answer your question about the child in a tube, but others have done that already. BTW, we are in our early fifties and not particularly fit.
Happy
camping,
Mike and Jan.

Hi Mike and Jan,
I am seriously considering getting a tinnie for carrying on the roof of my cruiser. The 3.75 Quintrex was my first choice of boat, however although I am quite fit, I am concerned about how difficult it would be to lift on to the roof. I realize that once you get the boat past the point of balance it should slide on easily with rollers fitted. Its just that initial lift that worries me, approx 80kgs isn't it. I know you said it all pretty easy but I need some reassurance that it is really that easy. Maybe I need to try one.
Regards,
Al-one

Phil, we too were anxious at the beginning, so we attached a rope to the bow of the tinnie which was then turned around the roo bar and held in position by Jan as a safety net while I lifted the boat at the transom, the bow of the boat resting on the back of the roof rack, located in position by the curved decking at the bow (the boat simply cannot slide backwards). Keep in mind that with the boat leaning up against the roof rack you are not lifting the whole weight of the boat, just most of it until you get it horizontal, at which point you are carrying half the weight and the car he other half. We lost one of our rollers somewhere on the GRR and haven't replaced it because we found that a length of fairly large diam. poly pipe, split long ways and clipped over the rear bar of the roof rack allows the boat to slide along ffortlessly into position. On many occasions in remote areas we have had some wonderful people come up and ask if they can help, but were very surprised at how easily we managed it. we had to just in case they weren't there next time. Hope this helps. BTW the 3.75 Dart is the bees knees.
Happy
camping,
Mike and Jan.

Phil, everyone has their opinion but here's
mine, for flat
water fishing a vnose punt is the only way to go (and can still handle a decent chop albeit not as
well as a traditional style hull)
For what you want it for in your budget range I would seriously consider a 399 stacer proline, 110kg and super stable compared to traditional hulls, much better if there are to be 4 sitting in it. If the extra 10kg is a concern for rooftop action go a quintrex explorer.
Depending upon the importance of speed, towing tubes and portability you could put a 25 or 25 yamaha on it. If it were
mine I would get a stacer with the 30 3 cyl or 25 2 cylinder 2 carb model yamaha, (there is also a 1 carb model25 hp, best to avoid in my opinion, much rougher running and smokier if trolling). With only a 15 or 20 it would not go too
well with 4 aboard. Mates have one with a 30hp yamaha and it flies however note a 30 is above the hull rating.
My last boat was a quintrex 385 explorer with the yamaha 25 (virtually the same thing except the stacer has higher sides), could be roof topped and went with us to
cape york on top of an off road trailer.
