Anyone been to Kangaroo Island recently. Are all the roads sealed, or are there any secret spots to play. Looking at spending about 5 days down there, fishing and 4wd'ing and don't want to waste my time. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

the only spots u will use 4wd will be on the beaches, quite a few roads are sealed, they are to all the tourist spots. There are plenty of spots to fish off the beach, rocks and lots of bream in most of the rivers.

G'day PajBoy.

we're heading down there just after new years. I put a similar post on the forum seeking 4wd tracks etc. back in September - see post # 26489.

in regards to sealed roads, from previous trips (2), the central Playford Highway and South Coast Road are sealed, as are a couple of raods linking these two and most roads near the towns on the Eastern End (Kingscote, Penneshaw etc).

If you want to get off the bitumen there are alot of gravel roads, but are generally not as direct as the sealed roads. It's a good zig-zagging journey if you have a good navigator, and the bush away from the farming regios is fantastic. The North Coast Road is a good drive but can be a bit corrugated in places, and the iron stone marbles can be a bit dicey at times. I think it's worth the drive if you take it easy though, and Stokes Bay is a "must see" if visiting KI.

When there I'm hoping to spend a couple of days exploring down at the Wesrtern end of the island looking for a few tracks that offer some challenges for the Challenger

Cheers
Dan.

Hi All,

Just returned form K I on Mon 31st after a great week exploring the island.

Sealed roads are: Hog Bay Road (Penneshaw to Kingscote), 20kms of Willoughby Road to Cape Willoughby, American River road, Playford Highway (central road), South Coast Road, Seal Bay road, West End Road.
Corners are very sharp, so go speeds for corners.

All other roads are dirt and the corrugation was not to bad. On K I they do not cut the corrugations and pot holes out they only back fill them and they become rough very quickly.

Worst corrugated roads are: Western end of Playford Highway going to Cape Borda light house and the eastern end of the Willoughby Road to Cape Willoughby.

Accommadation is everywhere and can recommend the Neapon Bay caravan park at Brownlow 3kms from Kingscote.

Have a great time! Regards P&J.
