So according to 4WD Monthly you should buy a Disco and a Waeco? Wonder what the next gem will be?

How could so many people get things so wrong over the years. ;-)

Have Roothy and Co got pet names for Waecos and Engels yet? They refer to Toyotas as Hungys (what the ?!), so they must have silly names for other things.

This mag gets more frivolous every month.

It was a test lab that conducted the tests, it does'nt mean waeco is better, i know which is more reliable! the waeco has a great compressor that's about it!

Hi.
What I am saying is that practical experience is the best guide.
Maybe the lab is the bubble.
I am presently finding the mag articles a bit irritating though (superficial) and that coloured my response.

I believethe Waeco to be more economical as tests show, but as others have pointed out, it shouldn't be the sole criteria to judge them both. Whatever, they're both damn good units, just as the Disco is an excellent vehicle. It's just the sneering responses by people who don't happen to have a Disco or a Waeco that are a bit childish. They aren't telling anyone not to buy a Cruiser or Engel. I also concur re: the lack of quality in that magazine and doubt if they'd have much of a readership were it not for the giveaways. Having said that, I doubt if Pat or Roothy did the test.

Sorry if it offended you.
It was tongue in cheek. Magazine articles (and journalists) cheer one day and condemn the next, but life is rarely like that.
The market place will reflect what is good value for money over time.

hungy is slang for $100 note, along the lines of pinapples ($50) and lobster ($20)

so i think hes trying to be cool as its a 100 series

Would you be refering to the February 2006 edition?? I loved the November 05 edition....it carried a large advert for the October 2005 4wd show in Melb?? If it wasn't for the freebees I'd ditch the mag...poor old "Editor" Pat cannot even string an editoral together which has any value let alone provide any reasonable debate on issues relevant to a vast number of the readership. As for Roothy, he is a product of a past better forgotten!! So as for your fridge comparo.....I doubt it will convince any informed reader to change from their existing preferences. That's my view.....shame I have a year and a half of subscription left!!

Well said.

I bought a long subscription for my 14 yr old son who takes a deep interest in fourbys, bush camping and things mechanical.

The style of writing irritates him (and me, I get the 'used' mag). He would like more informative pieces by mechanics and others 'who are doing it'. A bit of real detail on GPS, camping sites, practical 'how to' driving, etc.

The extreme stuff and the Fourex is a turn off.

I get the feeling that some magazines have an eye for advertisers' wares when writing articles. Maybe the suppliers held a very good party for them?

Funny that, because in their "exhaustive testing" of fridges in their 4WD Accessories Guide, which was done in a temperature controlled chamber, the Engel/ARB 40L had rated power consumption of 1.6 amps/hr, whereas the Waeco 40L was rated at 2.0 amps/hr.

This is one reason why I now steadfastly refuse to buy so called 4 x 4 magazines, which are purely a vehicle for advertisers, along with a few poorly written & hastily put together articles.

Strangely enough Shaker, the reason you DON'T buy these mags, is the exact reason I DO buy them.......living in the country, I have no other easy means to keep up to date with what new "must have" toys I can waste my cash on. (apart from this site of course).....;-)))

Cheers mate

Shaker, reading the small print will show you the reason behind the variation in power use.

The Engel was set to run at about +2 degrees.
The Waeco was set at (minus) -2 degrees.

No, I don’t know why either!!

The Waeco had a very constant turn on/off temperature pattern, with a temperature fluctuation of only about 4 degrees, however that has to be expected when it is set at an extremely low temp setting.

The Engel had a fluctuation of about 7 degrees, it did not handle the extreme temperature that well at all, when compared to the Waeco, BUT, I believe the Waeco was set far too low, if it was set at the same temp as the Engel the results may (or even may NOT) be totally different.

Actually the only thing the test proved was the people responsible - were not !!

Interesting how we seem to focus on power consumption when assessing fridges.
While I checked out the rated consumption to ensure I'd have enough power, I had a heap of selection points which were more important to me.
Like:
Dual temp, with separate freezer
Built in digital temp read out and user selectable temp for cycling on and off
Enough refrigeration power to freeze stuff as quickly as the home freezer
Footprint, hight and accessibility to fit my vehicle for best space usage
Short @rse SWMBO able to access it without using a step.
Solid (steel) construction with steel hinges.
Well insulated so no insulation bag required and performs well high temp areas.

How much power does it draw? Don't know, and don't care much either as I can easily run the fridge and lights off the Deep Cycle for 2 days without running the vehicle. Probably more, fridge is set to cut out at 10.5 Volts and it has never got there. Lowest I've ever measured is 11.4V, using the digital voltmeter which is also included in the fridge control panel.

So (within reason), who cares how much power it uses, as long as you have enough to keep it going for your use.

Nope, I have a big EvaKool. However I have yet to hear anyone speak harshly about an Engel, especially in terms of cooling performance and power economy.

Reviewers will get criticised if their results seem to have come from a slanted test or do not accord with practical experience.

I think Waecos are good too, but they obviously do not have the insulation or strength of an Engel (or EvaKool for that matter).

I have had a Trailblaza for 10 years and never missed abeat and has been treated pretty rough at times. Dont have to use insulated covers or alter the temperature settings in conditions going from a frosty night to 40 degrees.

ev700 there is no difference between the insulation of an Engel or Waeco. The insulation thickness and qualities are identical.

You would hear many speak harshly about Engel if you were in the portable fridge repair business. You cannot afford to repair an Engel parts are so ripoff expensive

I must say right now that I'm a waeco owner, but that's only because I went to the 4WD adventure show in perth a few years back and the specials were pretty darn good, and I didn't have the extra 300 bucks it would have cost me for an engel.

The only thing I can say about the waeco that I like over the engel, and I'm not saying I don't like them, but, I like the interior light, and I like the reversible lid.

I have hired an engel several times and found my only complaint would be the lid comes off too easily. and is awkward to slide back on in a packed up vehicle.

NOW, as for that magazine. HHHMMPPHHH. My subscription is almost up and I won't be renewing it if the biggest priority is continually going to be XXXX and how much of it Roothy can drink. On the front page they always brag about "BLOCKBUSTER 275 PAGES OF RIP ROARING FORBYS"

I counted how many pages of adds once, it added up to 135 full pages.
