Forumites,
I'm looking for personal experiences, Pro's and Cons arond a 2000 Hilux Surf, I've been quoted a figure and I'm wondering if it's realistic. Diesel auto with 100,000 on the clock, (for what it's worth). For the stepson (17) who has just got his license.
Looking for constructive comments, this is his choice not
mine. Haven't even seen it yet, looking at on Tuesday, OK bring it on!!!

Gramps,
Checked the Red Book but couldn't find the Surf model, Hilux yes but not specifically the Surf. Jap imports loose their valve quicker and are considerably cheaper than "Normal" Hiluxes, or that's what I've found.

Bugga! Looks like you may have to do a Google search and see what sites like carsguide.com etc have to offer in the way of comparisons. Good luck.

Hi there Martyn, also you will find most insurance company's will only insure for market value not agreed value, which means might be worth 10k today, 5k tommorrow, how do you know that they are not ripping you off in the event of a claim which I hope you will not have to worry about. Just a thought so you know of what could happen.Might pay to get an insurance quote prior to buying one. Good luck with what you do either way. Try and get the one with the 3litre in apparantly a lot less trouble from what I'v heard, but there are plenty of forums on the surf's. Just do a google search and you will find. There was an issue with overheating with the surfs but that may have been on the earlier models not sure. Your search will give you all the answers you reqiure Good luck Regards Steve Miller

Just a follow up - re- Insurance - A friend has recently purchased a 4x4 - he was also looking at buying the surf - He was financing the purchase - and it was either the Bank or the Insurance company would not insure the car or allow the Finance if he bought the Import ( i.e. SURF )
so he ended up buying a diesel Hilux twin cab
May not apply to you - but check into it before making any deals

Try Unique Car Insurance. Insured my import terrano with them and they were a pleasure to deal with. Their HO is in
Melbourne but I think they have branches in the capitol cities.

Hi Martyn
Not a Surf expert, but good mate has one (diesel, similar age) and it has recently developed a slight overheating problem on soft sand, and a nasty habit of disengaging 4wd at the most inappropriate times (usually in the middle of soft sand). Otherwise, he has had no problems, and is very happy. Not sure if the problems are related, or typical, but usually goes nonstop over almost anything.
