Has anyone experienced an excessive use of oil in their NP Pajero. I have found that during the past 15,000Km it has used some 4.5 litres of oil. There is no indicitive evidence of oil leaks nor smoke emissions. The vehicle is 18 months old.

Hi,

CLICK HERE and you will be taken to a site that deals with a lot of the common problems assosciated with excessive oil concumption.

One of the ones that a lot of people seem to overlook is to ensue they are using oil of the right viscosity for their particular vehicle.

Given that your vehicle is only 18 months old is it still under warranty as this may be the best option.

Best of luck anyway.

Hi again,
As I said, 1l/1000k maybe a bit high, but NOT unusual. And not confined to Mitsubishi either. Every piston engine uses some oil between oil changes. That's just the way they work. If you don't see a drop in level between changes, then you may just have had a lot of short runs and condensation and other residues made up for the amount of oil burnt.
But there is NO piston engine that does not burn some oil, and I repeat, if my motor used .3l per 1000k, I would not be the least bit worried about it!

Cheers

Hi,

Well, that's just over 1/4l per 1000k. Would not consider that excessive (and neither will the dealer!)

Good Luck

Sure... most of mine didn't either. I had a Sigma once that used 1l/1000 from new and never changed. Most manufacturers will say that up to 1l per 1000k may be considered normal.

cheers

Are you serious, if they consider 1L per 1000 normal I am glad I don’t own a Mitsubishi. Oil consumption on a engine that new should be non existent.

If it is using that much oil there must be evidence, look for Blue smoke when you rev the motor Give it a couple of big reves right up to the red line, Also when you start it up.
Check Spark plug’s for oil as well, and on the driveway for drops of oil.

i suppose your right i couldnt see a dealer or manufacturer giving you a new car on warranty because it burns minimal oil, but surely it must shorten the life span of the engine, id be more inclined to trade it in then keep it for the normal length of time

My diesel pajero new was using 250ml to 500ml between 5000k oil changes until about 20,000k then tapered off to nothing at 70,000k. Assumed it was the running in process, bedding the rings etc.
I have been using penrite hpr diesel - 20/60.
At 260,000, it is now starting to use 250ml of oil between oil changes.

This use does sound a little excessive for a new car, and oil consumption does change with the type (make and viscosty) of oil being used. A change of oil can also result in more use too.

So who does your oil changes and is it to the manufacturers recommendation?

I will add my 2 pence worth,
I agree with Brian, check oil viscosity but also what oil is being used? I pay mega bucks for my oil and do changes more often than recommended, (at about half recommended intervals) and have always found this the best. Seems funny we buy vehicles worth mega bucks and then scrimp on maintenance. A mate came back from the Kimberley and needed an oil change and couldn't get the oil we use at Katherine, and with a clean running 80 series T/D he used 4 ltrs getting to the Alice, changed back to the oil he uses on a regular basis and ran the rest of the way another 1800k's with no oil used.

Thank you all for your replies. However I would consider that amount of oil used excessive. The car is serviced to Mitsubishi requirements at the appropriate timings, by the same service centre that has serviced all three of my Mitsubishi products. The oil is Penzoil 20W-50. I consider that a vehicle this new would use say 250 ml of oil per 5000km. In this case 5l per 15000 km is almost an oil change. It is in for a service and I will know the problem by days end.

Hmmmm
You will know the problem by day's end? You must be the ultimate optimist!

Cheers and Good Luck

(I agree it is more than most people would expect.. but you will find it is "within specifications", unless there is evidence of a leak or maybe just 1 or 2 spark plugs fouling up)

I agree. Far too much oil used in that distance. I would consider that excessive. I don't know what your oil change intervals are, but that probably has the potential to run the sump dry and damage the engine within the normal oil change period. I would be right onto the dealer over this. It is becoming increasingly common among modern engines to use excessive amounts of oil. Subaru has a big problem with the 2.5L engine and the General Motors LS1 V8 in the Commodore had a very well documented problem leading to rebuilding or replacing of many engines. Whatever the reason however, most people expect to buy a new car and never have to worry about the oil level - they expect that if it is properly serviced at the correct intervals, that should do. Now, we are getting some engines that require regular checking of oil intervals - that's progress?

Those Commodores were using rather a LOT more than .3l/1000.
Try 2l/1000. Now, that's not right!!
cheers

Gees, my 1983 Range Rover with over 330,000 kms didn't use anything like that and it leaked most of what it lost :-)
