G'day
Your brand choice are GME (my preferred) Icom and Uniden. The key to maximum performance is the antenna. The GME site has good info on antenna choices.
In cars should be 5 watt output. The cheaper handhelds are only for short distance comms.
GME UHF Transceivers and Antennas
I currently run a AE4703/G antenna (GME) as I have had the lighter ones fail after extensive corrugations due to excessive antenna movement.
Regards
Paul

Ewez, that all depends on whether you can fit it into the dash, under the dash on the side of the centre console or, like me, on the back of the centre console.
A good place to start would be the Uniden UH088sx. Good size, front speaker, cellcall, and not too expensive. As for outback travel, as long as it has 5 watt power it will do the job.

EWEZ,
I'm with MUZZGIT. I'm in QLD, ordered one through Prestige Communications in WA last week, fitted it on the weekend. $295 for radio, aerial and cable. Ordered 3pm Wednesday, arrived 11am Thursday. I'm impressed!!!! I know GME and ICOM are supposed to be better quality, but I have a Uniden in another vehicle and have not had any problems. I think they are good value for money.

Ewez,
The "outback travel" bit has me a little puzzled.
Are you aware that UHF is limited to about 30km range, and that your only chance of extending that is through repeaters that are usually only found on fringe areas of the deserts. So as a means of emergency communication, they may not be very good.
Cheers
phil
