I am looking at getting a dog (kelpie) in the next few weeks. Because of this the dog will be in a cage in the back of the car whilst travelling which means that I am looking at getting an offroad trailer. This will only carry light bulky things like swags, tent bags etc so talking very light weight (though the trailer will weigh about 250kg's I think). Also have a roofrack but that only carries light stuff as
well.
Am I safe to tow this with my vehicle? If so is towing in 5th gear ok? I know that in general towing in 5th is bad but is that only for caravans, camper trailers etc which weight much more than what I am looking at.
Thanks,

Nothing wrong with towing with what you have.
AFAIK , its the same motor that went into the GU's. No speed demon , but goes and tows OK.
Personally , I wouldn't worry too much about towing in 5th with the trailer. Just make sure you dont allow the motor to lug along , keep up the revs , which may mean downshifting a little more regularily.

Gossy - I have a 2.8 GU and tow my 1.2 tonne (when loaded and 700kg unladen)Kanga Camper with no problems. As has been noted previously don't worry about using 5th just don't overload the gear and let the vehicle jerk etc.

considering my trailer will only weigh 250kgs unladen I shouldn't have a problem at all then.
Thanks,

Having a trailer means that you can save fuel by ditching the roof rack . Less drag from the roof rack will also help towing .

this was also part of my 'master plan'. Really notice the extra fuel usage with the roofrack fully loaded. It's not heavy stuff for obvious reasons but it's big and bulky which is hard to push thru the wind. This won't be a problem with the trailer.
