Thylacene, renowned for their strange antics in Victoria at this time of year!!

Geoff,

Grey hair is hereditary, you get it from children. Baldness is caused by watching the Wallabies.

If it's reddish orange its Mars, otherwise and most likely it's Venus

Venus can be seen in the western sky after sunset, it's pretty huge you cant miss it. Mars rises in the east around sunset, smaller and definately coloured red.

If it ws venus, it should still be in the SW to W sky, at about 10 deg. Mars is in the NE at the moment. If what you were looking at was at 75 deg altitude, then buggered if the program I've got knows what it is.

Is that a special program or a freeby I can access on the web?

Teens are interested in the night sky etc.

Thanks

If you stand with your back to the light and bend forward as far as you can until you can see the light between your legs it will become very clear that the light your are seeing is in fact coming from......

Uranus.

Ha!

Try this skymap

Mars should be to the North-East about half way up.
Venus to the West-South-West a little above the horizon.

Starry Nights Enthusiast was a freeby on CD from PC World magazine, probably 12 months or so ago. If you know of any nerds who buy ard keep PC World, then you might be able to grab the CD and install it. I haven't looked at too many other type of programs like this, but I can say that it's very easy to use and give real-time simulations a realistic view of the night sky, with satelites, stars, etc etc.

You can buy the latest from here

Starry Night Enthusiast

but if you can get the freeby, it's a good start.
