Anyone been to Dragon Tree Soak? If so what's it like, how did you get to it and how hard was it?
Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks

From previous reports it's a hard track to follow. Position S19o 40', E123o 22' off the Kidson Track.

I have had a look at both Raster and GDT Maps. There is a
cleared line heading North East off the Kidson/Wapet. According to GDT it meets up with a track from Anna Plains Station. Then it peters out shortly afterwards. From there I have counted 38 dunes to cross and then a run North West up the dune corridor to Dragon Tree Soak. Probably a trek of 80km return
I found this on Google:
"Dragon Tree Soak is a swamp believed to be a relict of the riverine vegetation found along the Mandora Palaeoriver during its partial rejuvenation by the wetter climates of the early to mid Holocene (Jaensch and Lane 1993). The swamp supports beds of bullrush Typha domingensis and is surrounded by a low woodland of Sesbania formosa; these and other plants are markedly confined to the Soak. It is used by birds from the surrounding hummock grasslands but also has species generally associated with scrub or tree-lined watercourses elsewhere. Species not recorded elsewhere in the region but present in the Typha beds were the Clamorous Reed-Warbler Acrocephalus stentoreus and the Australian crake Porzana fluminea (Jaensch and Lane 1993
I am going that way next winter and might consider a trek in to it.
So far I have been unable to find any tracks leading to it. The place must be as remote as one can get!

Thanks Willem. That's helpful. I was wondering if there was a road in of some description. It does look an inviting, remote location. I am keen to investigate it. There is
no access from the Canning SR, I presume?

Michael
It seems that your only access from the Canning is at
Well 33(
Kunawarritji turnoff). Then along the Wapet and Kidson Tracks.
I should be in that area in mid July 2006. Looking for another vehicle to tag along as my mates are too busy working their fingers to the bone to get away.
There is also a track into Gwenneth Lakes off the Wapet I would like to see. There is an abandoned oil
well there as
well.
I will be towing a bush trailer with extra fuel supplies on board.

The "Dragon" is a tough sucker to meet! The closest shot lines are very overgrown following the un-seasonal rains in the area over the last two rainy seasons. This has almost obliterated the lines in
places. Do not expect to come back with any duco left on the sides of your vehicle! Some cross-country driving is necessary, and there are some big dunes to deal with too, this and the vegitation keeps the dragon secure in it's lair. Hope this helps.
