Gq front diff

Has anyone experianced front diffs on a gq patrol leaking diff oil at the welds in the centre. Rtght near the diff center. Is it a matter of running a weld?

Ah.... nope! This is a first for me......
Is the vehicle fairly new to you, or have you had it a while now? Reason I ask.... have you or the previous owner thumped the hell out of the diff by juming dunes or something? Only way I could see it happen is that you've bent the diff up a few degrees and opened a weld.
Only guessing...but I've never heard of one leaking at a seam before unless it's been almightily bashed.

Yep. My 88 Mav developed this problem, weeping at the welds around the banjo. Drained the oil and re-welded it. Came back again later, re-welded it. Seemed ok till I sold it. Heard that a few early ones developed this problem.

Yes, common problem on GQ's, seen a few over the years, the housings never seem to break or the cracks go very far but usually just around the triangular filler piece as the axle tube leaves the centre on the long side

i had a 89 gq which had done a lot of hard work ,what with 4 kids a lot of touring and high country trips and was maintained develope a crack in said spot .had it welded a few times but in the end i stripped it down and had it fixed by kents in
melbourne. my current gq has a stiffener welded on the long axel side which Euraka off road in dandenong make up .i know of other gqs cracking alongside the weld, one did it on the way back from the cape and was welded back up in
normanton but had to be done again at
mataranka,it lasted to
melbourne where it was was stripped down and kents fixed it .seems it is a common problem, a lot of flex and corugations will do it ,or trying to make like a 747 will definately do it.

Had this problem with
mine about 3 years ago. Had it exrayed and welded up and has never been a problem since. And I have been on some of the roughest roads around since I've had it done, probably done about 70,000k's since.

The stiffner that robsil talks about is a pretty common thing on early GQ's.
Mine had it when I bought it but I was told that it was a factory thing.
Mine was an 89 and every other GQ I saw had it so I believed the factory thing.
It's probably a bit late to go asking NIssan for one now, but you never know.
My neighbour with an 88 or 89 Mav had the problem despite the stiffner. He was a retired gent and while he asked his car to take him to some out of the way
places I doubt he was overly hard on it.

Thank you to everyone, for replying. It looks like i will go for the welding option. I might even go for welding a brace on it. I can not say that l have had abused it. Nor had it flying. It is an 89 model tho. Thanks again. Cheers!
