Hi all, help is needed again, I cant work out why the preheat on my 78series troopie is not working, Im not getting the light coming on the dash for preheat and its starting rough. I have replaced the fusable link, preheat relay($130 dollars later) and checked my pre-heat timer on a cruiser at work, which worked fine .All of the bar and power wire is fitted to the plugs alrite.

I had the tappets checked at toyota, and ever since then it hasnt worked(I ran out of time to take it back, and when I did, they didnt want to know about it).Ive checked to see if they left any earth/power wires off, but cant find anything wrong at all.

help from anyone with this would be orsm.
cheers

Can you hear the relay "clunk" when it comes on and drops out? If so your timing circuit works and the problem is with the power to the plugs. There could be a dropping resistor somewhere as the plugs most likely are less than 12V types ( I do not have a manual for the 78, only for my 75 series)
Follow the heavy gauge wire from the glow plugs to the relay and then to the battery and check for bad connections.

To check theglow plugs individually you must take the busbar off and test each with a buzzer or Ohmmeter on low range. Good plugs read a near short circuit, bad ones an open circuit.

HI ,Had this occur a coulpe of times in the past and I remember a problem with the connection at the post where the power supply meets the glow rail. Was not discovered until the conection was parted and verdigrease cleaned from this area.Suggest you clean ALL conections, but check for evidence of failure in doing so. Hope this helps.

Is yours a 1Hz or a 1HD-FTE?

Hi
Whats your charge light doing...anything out of the usual ??? The regulator on the alt switches earth to the preheat when the motor is off, (so the timer knows the motor is not running) and power when it is running....might be something to do with this....check the alt plugs and if you have the meter, the charging volts.

ive got a volt meter on the dash, and going be that, it is charging correctly at idle as well as at full noise. although 1 thing that i have noticed is when i indicate the volt meter needle moves, only just enough that u can see it(only at idle). the engine has done just over 100,000kms, and i fitted a new alt about 3 months ago because the bearing were slowly starting to make some noise.

lost,
Check the earth lead from the main battery to the body. I had some work done on the 80 series and this wire was left off. The vehicle ran OK, but as soon as I used the brakes or any other thing that required power the whole system went crazie.

I have had an identical thing happen with my 2H pre heat circuit. I haven't solved it yet but the alternator is now the prime suspect having replaced, cleaned and checked every other part of the circuit. I believe there is a signal from the alternator (mentioned in a post above) that tells the system when the motor is runing and this is the culprit.

Am currently using a manual switch and with the warmer weather coming the need to fix it quickly is reduced. Be interesting to hear what your fix is as I reckon it will be the same as mine.

Good luck.

The 1hz. has a series resistor in the inlet manifold tract to no. 5 cyl. It may have open circuited.
