Hi,

Has anyone any details of the process of a Vic resident/drivers license holder buying a car from NSW. It's registered in NSW till June 06.

I know I will have to get a RWC in VIC to register it here but I am mainly concerned with the process of getting it down here - I propose to go up to pick it up and drive it back.

I s the NSW owner allowed to just transfer the reg or does he have to cancel it? If so, I would need a temp VIC certificate to drive it down.

Any clarification would be much appreciated.

Legally you should obtain a NSW permit to drive it to Victoria, then proceed to the nearest police station or Vicroads office & get another permit to drive it home.
The NSW registration can't be transferred to you unless you have permamnent residence in NSW.
Unofficially, you may ask him to let you drive it home & then post the plates back to him, he can then cancel the registration & obtain a pro-rata refund.
Make sure that you get a receipt from the vendor showing the make, model & VIN number of the vehicle, this will be needed when re-registering in Victoria.

I bought my car in Vic and needet a new RWC here in Qld, but the mechanic here told me that the Qld RWC works in Vicoria but not visa versa. I would ring and find out. I handet the plates back here in Qld and got a receipt which I send back to the owner in Melbourne.
The outstanding rego goes back to the old owner.
When you ring Vic Roads or Queensland Transport they will tell you that you have to cancel the rego before you drive it home and get a permit...... but nobody does.

Good luck

My advice .... don't have an accident!

I can also assure you that a Queensland RWC does not work in Victoria.

I bought mine from a guy visiting from Sydney. It was relatively straightforward, but a few things to note, but its been 18mths and my memory for the detail is failing.

- NSW rego papers, there is a slip at the bottom (think) the seller fills out, signs and gives to you. This is your proof of the vehicle origin.
- Have the seller write you a receipt (this is your proof of ownership).
- Get a Vic RWC of the vehicle
- Take to Vicroads and get it registered. Bring along RWC, old rego and all receipts, etc.
- NB. PRIOR to going to VicRoards, call them first. Get Vicroads to do a search on the VIN, to report on finance, seizures, etc. If it is clean and on their system already, I think that an Vicroads office can do the registering.
- If it is not clean, you must take it to a Vicroads inspection for them to confirm details, prior to the registeration.
- Send a letter to NSW RTA with the Vic rego receipt, license and rego papers to request they cancel the NSW rego.
- Send the NSW RTA response to the CTP insurer and request they refund the remaining CTP balance to you

Call vicroads, they helped me.

I am sure that you can't cancel someone else's registration.
Once the vehicle has been sold to a non NSW resident, the registration is void when the vehicle crosses the border.
Do it right, get the necessary permits!

Ok, bad wording I think. I think the previous owner had sent something to NSW RTA upon signing the car over to me, and I got a portion of the old rego paper, just too long ago now to remember. I just checked my old letter to RTA Certificates Unit, and it asked for the NSW registration balance to be refunded to me, which did occur a few weeks later. Then I asked for and got the CTP balance after that from Alliance.

I bought my car in NSW but live in QLD.

Usually you have two weeks to change over the rego. A few days after I picked up the car I drove it Qld Transport, where I took off the NSW plates and handed them in (to QLD transport). You get a receipt when you hand them in, which you have to send to the RTA to cancel the NSW rego. From what I rememeber they keep the remaining money for the rego but pay out the remaining CTP, minus a $20 admin fee.

At QLD transport they gave me a new set of QLD plates on the spot and checked the car's VIN and engine number.

When I picked up the car from the seller, I got them to sign the QLD transfer papers. These are not needed for rego but it's just proof that you are the new owner of the vehicle (and are therefore responsible for any traffic fines from that moment).

Hi,
Befor actually buying the vehicle telephone REVs, (Register of Encumbered Vehicles),
they will tell you if the vehicle has finance owing etc: this is done over the phone, however you may now be able to do it online. At a later date they will forward you a very moderate invoice which you may disregard however it's better you pay as you are then guaranteed title of the vehicle, i.e. they payup should some previously unknown party with a financial interest turn up out of the blue.

Printed on the back of the Registration Papers is a two part Notice of Disposal, the seller fills in the top part and forwards same to RTA advising that he has disposed of the vehicle and advising of the buyers name, address, sale price or market value (whicher is the higher) and license number.

You then drive the vehicle back to Vic using your existing license, (your an interstate visitor) driving a vehicle with registration valid in all states. The NSW Green Slip Insurance (Third Party) transfers with the sale and remains cuurrent untill the NSW Rego expires or is cancelled.

On arrival in Vic. go through your local rego process then forward the appropriate documentation to the NSW RTA to advise that you want the NSW Rego cancelled, you are then entitled to a pro rata refund on the NSW Green Sip Insurance.

It would be worth you while to phone the NSW RTA on 13 22 13 prior to straighten out any loose ends and to clarify just what documentation they require.

Sorry, correction.
I believe you will need to do the cancellation of NSW Rego first, otherwise you would be attempting to register a prviously registered vehicle in another state.

Once again invest in a telephone call to NSWRTA (13 2213), alternativly you may find what you want by doing a google on RTA, and whilst there have a look at REVS
