I have a 95 80 Seried LC 4.5L on gas and have been unable to rev much past 3500 rpm, I took the car to the gas fitter and he found, when removing the drain plug from the convertor, a brownish sludge ran out. This build-up of sludge restricts the movement of the diaphragm. Apparently there has been some bad LPG and this sludge collects in the convertor and gums it up. Some people have been able to claim the repair cost back from BP, who have admitted responsibility, as to any other companies footing the bill i don't know. The cost to rebuild my convertor will be $409. This is in
Perth, has anyone from other state heard of these problems?

My converter was fitted upside down in an 80 series 94 model, and it was full of oil which cost me a similar figure to what you were quoted.
Mine was due to incorrect fitting and not the gas used.
Spoke to firm who did the job for me and they said they had had several rebuilds due to the BP gas.
Apparently if you have a BP card or can prove you have used BP pretty exclusively you will have a case for them to answer.
One client of theirs had 4 vehicles which travelled from
Melbourne to
Brisbane all with the same problem.
He had a BP card and had taken it up with company; don't know the result.

I hope your getting a dyno after that rebuild for $409 a impco or b2 rebuild kit is only $100-$150 and a brand new omvl converter is only 420-450 fitted .my local lpg fitter sells brand new b2 converters for under$250 around $400 fitted and dynoed...

QAuote for a brand new impco converter fitted was $600+ and the firm said they would not dyno a full time 4WD.

Now that's interesting - "would not dyno a full time 4WD".
I suppose you's have to jack up the front
wheels whilst the back
wheels were on the dyno and vice versa and then add up the BHP figures!
Be a bugger if it slipped off the jack though.............

Bilbo, I think that is the reason he would not dyno it.

Ive had a Gas vehicle now for about 5 years + never had any problems with the gas convertor ( apart from the time it cracked due to coolant not geting to it and it freezing over- then numb nut mate poors hot
water on it )
cost me about $200 for a new convertor ( done the job myself )
where is this ' sludge' comming from that you speek of and why would it build up in the convertor only ???

Frank, The 'sludge ' is an accumulation of process by-products carried over in the gas, a major petroleum company had a problem with one of their process plants which caused excessive amounts to be carried over into the final product. Why the accumualtion is in the convertor only I don't know but I have seen several stripped down convertors and they were a mess, the movement of the lever that acts on the diaphragm becomes severly restricted and other parts inside the covertor become clogged or covered. I now can't rev over 3200 rpm without losing gas supply and my economy is dreadful.
