I have 5 near new Cooper AT's. I am thinking of buying an additional casing for the longer trips & am wondering whether to get another AT ... or an ATR in anticipation of when i finally change over all of the ATs (when they finally wear out). Are there any problems in mixing the AT & ATRs when off road?

No problems at all, Drew. In fact initially it is very hard to pick the difference between the two treads (the ATR has a higher edge). The only thing you will notice is that the old ATs wear out quicker than the ATRs.

I would imagine that there wouldn't be a problem, but you can ring Cooper on 1300 266 737 and get the info you need from the horses mouth

The ATR is the revised AT, tuned more for Aussie conditions and with higher mileage. You can get them in standard, 6, 8, 10 ply.
No, I don't work for them, I just happen to have the catalogue in front of me!

I have done that.
Got a set of A/T in 265/70R17 for the Prado but took them off after 37,000km (half worn) to be spares and as tyres for future camper trailer that are compatible to vehicle. Replaced with ATR in same size (that I am very happy with) and can see no issue mixing them around.
So have 5 ATR and 5 A/T which gives me a full set on car and camper with 3 spares between the two. Purchasing some ROH RTX 17" Alloy rims as second set.
Cheers

Nice and quiet on the road. Smoother than the A/Ts. Feel OK in wet. Have not slid off the road yet! Have hit a few
water patches (up to 2 inches deep) and they coped ok. No aquaplaning or anything.
They are grippy enough to activate the ABS on bitumen. Had a big play in sand on the weekend at
Peake and they coped ok at 12 psi.
Good all-round but I may try the Goodyear MTR next time around just to see if a bit more aggresiveness helps without sacrificing too much safety on the tarmac. ATR's feel good on the road. Took a few chips out doing tracks around
Whyalla but we were playing in some very rocky ground.
Wear is negligible after 20,000km.
Cheers

got A/Ts on my Patrol, ones on the rear have done 84000 Yes 84000 and still have plenty on them.Replaced the front ones when I had new shocks and a 2in lift done about 20000 thou ago. They are nearly as good as new.Mostly on the black top but a couple of trips to
steep point and various other mildly off road trips.

With the different ply ratings (standard, 6, 8, 10 ply), what would be the reasoning behind going for a lesser ply? To my mind, I would be thinking 10 ply all the way, but are they heavier, or less suited to different conditions, or just plain twice the price?
Just wondering, as I will be up for new tyres soon.

thanks for all your replies & i have also spoken with the coopers distributors.
looks like i will go for an ATR as the additional spare, but only use it off-road (ie: with an AT on the other wheel). Longer term i will change the ATs over for LT-ATR's so this will not lock me into the ATs for as long
