Unknown (forgotten) stock routes

Hi guys,

I'm in the process of organising something with a cantankerous old drover (COD) in WA. Does anyone have, or know of somebody who can assist in identifying what could have been known, as either the Western or Eastern Stock Route in WA?

From what we know, it diagonally follows the De Grey Stock Route, starting around Turee Creek (south west of Newman), then heads south east across the Ashburton River to Mt Vernon, down to Mulgul, Peak Hill and follows (what is now known as) the Great Northern Highway to Meekatharra.

We, or at least, COD has managed to obtain copies of very old maps from the WA Government. However, because of the lack of significant land marks, it's difficult to ascertain the route. We have also consulted Heritage Trails WA.

Because of our involvement in the Canning Stock Route, we have extensive knowledge of the various Government and non Government organisations within WA. The CSR is very well documented. However, other Stock Routes remain largely forgotten.

If anyone knows of another COD who drove cattle in the area (circa 1950), or person who has conducted historical studies of WA Stock Routes I would appreciate your help. Otherwise we will have to go down a long laborious path.

Regards

Kim

Kim,

If all else fails try Ron Moon at his guidebooks website or 4x4australia website. As you would be aware he undertakes a lot of trips with a lot of varied experienced people to say the least and I have found him and his helpful nature very valuable in the past. I feel sure if you dropped him a line and he knew the answer he would help.

Regards Trevor.

NSW Dept of Primary Industries has a book on TSR's in NSW. Perhaps W.A.'s DPI might have something similar, though you've probably already been there,

Try giving Peter Bridge a call from Hesperian Press. He may be able to help.

Hi there Kim, how are you going. I've got a map (no, not trying to be funny) will search it out - mightn't have anything, then again it might. Be in touch.

Thanks Ruth,

Any thing you can find would be helpful. Snowy is the guy that worked with the old fellow we spoke to in June, who had the photo album and was following in his fathers footsteps.

Hope you had a successful season after everything dried out.

Kim, thought you might remember us - we did have a good season and just waiting to go for 2 weeks leave fo family weddings, christenings, schoolies week etc. then back here for the summer.
Now, about these stock routes. Did find my map but it's only for Queensland stock routes (put out by gov.) - there's a couple there I have always wanted to go on.
Rick from SA (he's EO) and his father wanted to come down the Georgina one, but at the time it was too wet.
We are missing the storms (the rain part is missing us) but we are getting the thunder and lightning shows. Lots of 'old fella' talk about a good wet this year, certainly about a good flood.
Hope you find the stock routes and get the OCD on the road again. Keep us all informed.

Hi Ruth,

Snowy managed to get another map which was also unsuitable. I have to go up to the Kimberley again next year to visit some friends. We might take the oppurtunity to drive cross country and see if we can pick up the route. Might see you on the way through.

Have a good holiday. I'll keep you informed.

Kim
