I have a 2.8TD GQ (1996). I have looked everyone with no avail (including the Gregorys handbook). At what revs does the factory turbo officially kick in?

Hi,

There no "magic" rpm when they come in... The start spinning as soon as the engine fires....
In the 2.8 Nissan it will start producing useful boost around 1500 rpm.
cheers

Gossy, mine used to kick in about 2500 rpm, until I fitted a Turbosmart boost controller, it started to come in at about 2100 or there abouts after fitting it... Hope that helps?

this seems to be a bit of a black art with no definite answer as Hl says 1500 and John says 2500rpm.
Cheers,

Just to add more fuel to your dilemma. I'm quite sure my 2.8TD boosts around 1750rpm. It's quite noticeable when you hold your foot steady on the gas so your revs are slowly rising and all of a sudden you get thrown back in your seat. Not really with that tiny turbo. You will see your revs start to increase much faster though, when you get to that boost point.

As one of the other blokes said, the turbo starts spinning as soon as you start the motor. However, to find out when it starts to be of any "assistance" to your forward progress, I'd suggest you get hold of a boost gauge......you'll find the boost starts anywhere between 1000 and 2000 rpm and will "max-out" some time later (depending on how it's set up as far as waste-gate goes etc).

I am a great believer that all turbo vehicles should be fitted with both a boost and egt gauges if the driver wants to know what the donk is actually doing. The tacho is a very poor indicator of what your motor is "up to".

Dont know about the Nissan ,but in my 80 series 92mod, useable boost starts at 1350rpm , father inlaws 80 series 96mod [24valve] boost starts at 1600rpm ,and brother inlaws 100 series 03mod kicks in at 1500rpm. Luck of the draw ??? wtf.

All those engines are different, with different torque curves.

The 1HD-T was reknown for pulling better at low revs than the higher tech later 1HD-FT engine. 1HD-FTE fits the same category as 1HD-FT - except it has more torque than 1HD-FT across the rev range.

An adjustment to the fuel system will restore the lower rev performance

As Roachie mentioned, the reason why I have asked this question is to simply better understand my vehicle. Once I know what it should be doing, it's easier to know when things are not working correctly.
The boot guage seems like a good idea.
Thanks everyone for the replies.
