Hi all ,
I have a Magellan FX324 MAP Colour and I have transferred the info on the GPS to the SD card . I have put the SD card in a card reader and attached it to my laptop which has the Magellan / Hema Great Desert Tracks software .
BUT WHAT DO I DO NEXT if I want to get the data off the card and into the software on the laptop .
( Bonz , I'm discombobulated again !)
Thanks ,
Willie .

Hello - Magellan GPS units use two different formats for data storage. Data save to SD card is in a different format to that used when saving files direct to Magellan software. You have 2 options
1. Reload the data to a Magellan GPS, connect to a PC and use the track or waypoint menus in the Magellan sofware to "download from GPS"
2. Convert the SD stored data using GPSBabel and then use the track or waypoint menus in the Magellan software to "load from file".
If you cant (or can not be bothered) doing either of these email files to me and I will convert them for you. Will take about 1 minute.
Cheers
Greg

Hi Greg ,
That's a very generous offer you made to convert my files and I would like to take you up on it please . I previously emailed the question to Magellan in the USA but they failed to get back to me .
I have sent you a member message so that I can get your email address .
There is five files - which ones should I send ?
MAGUP.EXE
Magup.ini
Word.doc
ZEBUC124.HEX
detail00.img
Thanks a lot ,
Willie .

Willie - no worries ...but I think we need to sort out what youve done first ...none of the files you have listed are track/waypoint/route files?
MAGUP.EXE = executable file for program that uploads/downloads firmware and basemaps to Magellan GPS units
Magup.ini = setup file for abovementioned program
Word.doc = help file?
ZEBUC124.HEX = firmware for gps unit (uploaded with magup)
detail00.img = detailed map
How did you save the data to the SD card? I dont have an FX with me at moment (mate has one) and am not sure how you save data to the SD card (I was assuming it is the same as the Meridian but maybe I am wrong?). Data is not saved to the SD card automatically, on Meridian you do it my using the card utilities menu and when saving track and waypoint data to SD card you manually specify the name of the file. So how did you save the files and what did you call them?
Cheers
Greg

Hi Greg ,
I guess you have figured out by now that I am a first clutz with computers .
I followed the instructions in the FX324 manual (p.77) where it gave instructions for transferring data to and from the SD card .
I just had to go to the correct part of the menu , pick what I wanted to save and , select the "to SD Card" icon and enter . It probably asked me what I wanted to to call the file and it had some suggestion and I just left it at that .
I could delete what is on the SD card now and go and do it again and give the file some name that I would recognise as the data is still in the SD card . What do you think ?
It's a bit weird that you can transfer data from the Magellan software on the laptop to the SD card and the GPS can use this , but you cannot transfer it back to the computer .Or am I assuming that the stuff I transferred from the Laptop to the SD card never became part of the GPS memory . Don't worry I am confused and am going round in circles !
Cheers ,
Willie .

Willie - yes give it another go and see what happens..and yes it is strange that Magellan choose to use two different formats for files saving...dont ask me why, as we can see what frustration it can cause!
If I get a chance I will have a look at my mates FX and see how it works...though I just had a look at the user manual and it seems that what you wish to do should work...so keep at it.
Cheers

Greg ,
I just got rid of everything on the SD file ( but I saved the files on the laptop ).
Then I went back to the GPS and saved the Waypoints and
Routes again under the file name 07NOV005 . Then I put the SD card into the reader and tried to open it in Great Desert Tracks . It came up with the message :
07NOV005.GWP is either not a Desert Tracks file or is corrupted
I'm back where I started from I guess , but at least I know the file that holds the info .
HELP !
Willie .

Willie - good stuff - as I mentioned you must convert SD card saved files before they can be opened with the software ....so email me the file and I will convert it for you... if you wish.
Cheers

Greg ,
I dont think I can add a file to a member message , so please Member Message me your email address so I can send it .
I notice your quote from Australia Twice Traversed which I have read and studied myself . I have looked at all his maps , transferred them onto modern maps and dreamed about trips to the Rawlinson Ranges which nobody seems to think is a possibility these days .
One wag I met in WA suggested that the
Gibson Desert was named that because Gibson so annoyed Giles that he ate him for desert when things got desperate - that's why they could never find a trace of him .
Cheers ,
Willie .

What data did you save to SD card?
Waypoints? Tracks?
Routes?
I would be loading whatever was downloaded onto the SD card as a file into GDT.
There will probably be some map (.img) files on the SD card (??) If so, leave them and use the other data on the card.
What Explorer said! :))
Use the 'Load from file' option for the data you wish to view!
eg. If you want the waypoints....go to Waypoints (on the toolbar), click 'load from file' and browse to your SD card (look for the .wpt files)..........

Arthur,
I want to download Routes" and "waypoints". I have tried the"load from file "option and the software then says it "cannot find a port ". It tries to "autodetect it " then gives up after a few minutes .
I will take Greg up on his beaut offer as I am a dud when it comes to computers .
Thanks for your help ,
Willie .

Hello mate - as mentioned in my first post there are two file formats used by Magellan Meridians (and FX units I assume) - files saved to your SD card are in a different format to that used by DAST and GDT (or any Magellan software for that matter) which are downloaded direct from the GPSs INTERNAL memory. Files saved to your SD card direct from Meridian GPS CAN NOT be opened using these Magellan mapping programs - they can only be utilised by the GPS itself..unless you convert them with some program eg GPSBabel...or reload to GPS and use the software download function.
Cheers
