Is there such a thing as an "after-market" Hill Descent Control that can be fitted to the Mazda Tributes?

Have already got the Black Rat snatch strap kit, haven't had to use it. Been Googleing for the HDC but to no avail, all other vehicles have it as an "optional extra".
I'll send an email to Ford and see if it can be added onto the Escape.

You have to be kidding.

Where are you going to get a Tribute to that you're going to need it?

Short of driving where a Commodore could go to Howitt hut on the easy route and trying to drop into the Wonnangatta from there, I can't see that a vehicle with little or no 4wd ability other than a bit of fun on sand dunes or to get to some beach fishing spots is ever going to need it.

In fact should you get far enough to actually need it make sure your ambulance subscription is paid up because medivac helicopters are bluddy expensive.

The fact that you are even asking scares me.

I hope it's a wind up.

Hi Michael,
I at times use my handbrake as decent..speed control on my auto, doing steep down hill works a treat to..but I think with ours the handbrake doesn't hook up to the wheels, but before I was put on to this I used to feather the brakes..cheaper than buying a new system.

Forget about it!!!
Why the hell do I have to put with people who hang Sh$t on others. Just because I neither want or need a Full on 4WD, why be so petty.
I'm sick of it. Every club hates SUV's, so you call pi$$ off.

Nice bloke you are!
You post a question on a public forum and when you get replies you don't like you crack the $hits.
Why post at all if you are not prepared to accept all manner of replies?

If you need HDC, then you need to be asking yourself whether you could get back up the same hill, just in case you have to turn around and come back. Some people don't like SUV's cause they do get stuck easilly, but sensibly driven SUV shouldn't get stuck in the first place. As long DEC (Driver Expectation Control) is used, softroaders such as Tributes, CRV's etc have a place in the bush,

If you car is an auto you colud as a last resort put it in reverse to go forwards down a hill. Just accelerate a bit if the car starts to speed up. I not saying this is good for your transmission but it colud get you out of a predicament. Oh, and going up a hill an auto will help you alot.

I have seen auto Freelanders, which have no low range but do have hill descent control, go most places a normal 4wd go. Its things like low clearance and long overhangs that tend to stop them.

Cheers

NO, NO, NO....Modern auto transmissions should never use reverse as a brake when traveling forwards. Some makes actually shut down after xyz seconds to stop you doing this. Read your vehicle handbook and come back here and tell us what it says about using reverse as a brake.

This way is cheaper-

Put your left foot on the brake, your right foot on the accelerator and "push" the car down hill. If you feel like you're going too fast just ease off the accelarator.

HDC is usually tied into the ABS and the engine management systems and in some cases the complete programming of the traction control system. I can't see that being very easy for an aftermarket company to tap into. They may be able to tap into the brakes to control that but if they can't control the engine speed as well it could be pretty dangerous. Therfore unless they see a good market they are unlikely to put in the effort and it is unlikely that an AWD vehicle that most people do not take into areas that need HDC would be seen as a good market. Sorry if that comment offends, but it is fact.

As stated by others, getting down such a hill may work, but the chance of you getting back up it again are almost nort.
