Background, Safari Snorkel, Uni Filter. Rood Rack.
Problem. I have read of sticking linkages and seem to be encountering similar problem at 270,000kms. Continually using WD40. Any advice which doesn't mean changing vehicles please. This IS a great friend etc!!
FYI current consumtion 16.5L/100kms.
Advice please. Thanks. Mike

After 6 years I have just sold my 3.0 l Nissan only because it was time to move on.I found it ran better after i did the followering,
paper air filter, correct spark plugs, good quality fuel filter and take the timing out to 10-15 degrees btdc. With this setup i was getting 12-13 litres per 100 kays on the highway.Towing the camper trailer it would go to 18-20 litres on a trip.Never had any problems with the motor, but I did Inox the motor every 6 months after I gave it a service and it only had 165000 kays on it after 11 years. They are a good reliable unit.

The RB30 had a rev limiter in the distributor it would be interesting to know if anybody found out if that affected fuel consumption and or performance because some rb 30s get great consumption and some got average consumption (extractors did help as well) but what of the dizzy and wether the rev limiter has been disabled in some of the more economical rb30s - a question I throw open to debate??

Kezza, any idea what the rev limit is? Mine revs happily up to 5500, and sounds quite happy doing so since I got the vacuum advance fixed. Of course that doesn't really help fuel economy :)

Have you have any work done on the carby. If not after 270000km's it may be time for a rebuild. I assume carby linkages you are ones you are talking about.

i have a 90model with rb30 335000ks the only engine probs i have had are the secondary butterfly on the carby sticking closed witch didnt help fuel economy.rev limiter on rotor button played up the other week so wouldnt rev past 4000 rpm and one of the govener springs on the dizzy snapped so fitted a slightly larger spring witch gave it a little more power down low i use mainly lpg and use about 22litres per 100ks dosnt matter is its highway- city -towing camper still uses the same also noticed when freeing up carby butterfly .that the vacume secondairies that work of vaccume were not opening fully so i disconected the vaccume arm and made it mechanical can really nitice diference now

I am interested in your comments re 2nd butterfly - what did you do to free this up? I haven't revved over 4,500 so assume rev limiter issue is really non issue. Also bit more info on vacuum secondaries would be appreciated. I have disconnected electric choke.
Thanks
Mike

to free buterflies up i remover carby 4 nuts and about 5 mins bought a can of carby cleaner sprayed and left for a while and slowly twisted butterfly then more spray and more twisting untill it was free took a few goes as for vaccume theres a little arm from vaccume pump conected to the butterfly with a little circlip just remove the clip and if you manually move the main butterfly you will see where a liitle arm actually hits the secondary butterfly thats where i twisted a small spring.and twisted it in to position from the main to secondary butterfly so you can still drive with only the main butterffly or when you put the boot in it will open hard to explain without showing you but if you pull the carb off should be able to see.also mine revs to 6500 with out a hastle

I've got a 95 model with the following

Extractors and 2.5 inch exhaust
K&N Air Filter
Lucas CAV Fuel Filter
Safari Snorkel
Always use premium unleaded

Biggest cause of loss of fuel ecomomy is the distributor - my vacuum advance had seized (from when I bought the vehicle 3 years old) and once replaced (some 4 years later) I find the engine runs better than ever. I get 13-14 l/100km on a good flat highway run @ 100km/h. I can almost get the same ecomomy towing if I stay around 90km/h

Nigel will rev to 6-7000 rpm but depends on the motor - very high revving motors usually most of the powerband is between 3800 to 5800
What do you get around town fuel consumption wise??

Kezza - I get anywhere between 17-22 litres per 100km around town, depending on what I'm doing. A/con always on to fight the humidity.

Thank you all for your responses to date. Plenty of food for thought! I do have extractors fitted but will now look to timing and carburettor. The second butterfly comment has set me thinking.
I will report back idc.

Hi Mike,

I've got a 91 RB30 patrol, from new, it has 230,000km and have never been able to get any more than about 16-17 mpg or 17.5l/100km. I've had a bit of work done on the carby- remove the heater grid, bring secondarys in quicker, extractors and advance timing. All improved power and torque but did nothing for the fuel economy. My problem might be the extra weight- water tank, long range fuel tank, rear _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx etc but really don't know. Wish I could get what the others above state.

Thanks Ray. I too have aux fuel tank and when loaded am operating close to GVM? Linkages appear to "stick" in damp cold start up coinditions. Once warm a bit of tampering around carby seems top alleviate/ fix problem for rest of day. I notice I only have this problem on the black top ergo shake rattle and roll!
I am now going to explore all the advice given and will report back idc.
I have experimented with Hiclone and agree with forum comments elsewhere. More power when stationary! Am intending to try reversing snorkel!
