My wife was driving our 2000 Nissan Patrol (130,000K ZD30 engine) last week when it just stopped. There was apparently no abnormal noise imediately prior to the failure, the engine just cut out. The vehicle has been with a local nissan dealer for the past week and they still have not determinede the problem. They can trell me that a pressure test has indicated that one cylinder is down 100psi. The vehicle will crank but not fire. They are currently sending the fuel pump away for testing.

Have any forum readers experienced similar problems and if so what was the eventual solution?

I hate to say it, but !
The pressure test indicating that one cylinder is down 100psi sounds like you could have the dreaded piston failure. The engine may need to be replaced or rebuilt.

Mark

The thing still has there other pistons. So one being down a bit would not stop it from firing up. If the piston has sh*t itself there would be no pressure reading at all. I'm guessing something to do with the pump if the computer shows no fault. Even without a turbo the engine should still fire up. Most early 4.2's fire up with no turbo.

True, it still has three other pistons. The pump is most likely the reason it is not starting, but I would be very concerned about one pot being down by 100psi ( 680kpa ). This could be a cracked piston, badly scored bore, burnt valve. With the knowledge we now have regarding the failures of these motors, I suspect this one is on its way out, the piston is in the early stages of failure.

Mine did the same about four years ago. Turned out to be the fuel pump. Hasn't missed a beat since changing it out (warranty).

Good luck and hope you are on the road again soon.

same thing happened to me, took the thing in and told them the turbo was shot, took two weeks for them to come back and agree. In that time they changed out the fuel pump, drained the whole tank and refilled it, replaced the fuel filter and then the turbo finally

muust be a Nissan thing

Well.....c'mon Roachie, don't keep us in suspense! Give us some new hp, trq, or % improvement figures, or are you working on a whole new thread for that ?

G'day Pezza,

Unfortunately, Berri Diesel Service doesn't yet have a dyno (but they're getting one in the near future); so I wasn't able to get any before and after concrete data.

However, it feels stronger by about 20%. It spools-up quicker and around town it seems to just sort of "breathe" easier.

I'm looking forward to seeing what effect it has on my fuel economy. But if I do have a noticeable improvement, I won't be able to say whether it is mainly attributable to the new snail or the new AMSOIL products I chucked into the diffs, tfr case and g'box last saturday. Also changed to AMSOIL's coolant stuff too.

I haven't had the camper trailer on the back yet....going camping this coming weekend (if the weather ever clears up!!!), so we'll see how it feels with a small load hangin' off the towbar too.

Cheers mate

I hope your not one of these people who expect any more power by changing diff oil and gearbox oil are you? Cause thats what it sounds like! ya gotta be kiddin!

Trucky......
No mate, I'm not one who hopes to get more power out of different oil etc, but I am hoping for better fuel economy.......the oils I've put in are noticeably "thinner" and the theory is they 'may' cause less rolling-resistence of the components.

I'm still running the 15w40 AMSOIL in the motor...now it's done 15,000klm.....and I have another lot ready to go in when I'm satisfied the old stuff has reached it's use-by date. BUT the new stuff I bought is 5w30.

At this stage the 15w40 is still going strong.....I am due to take another sample and send it off to Castrol for analysis.

Cheers

Roachie
