Looking for the easiest way into [and out] of the Wonnongatta Valley. I'll be towing a CT behind a TD Auto Prado 120. Would like to go in from NE Vic if this is possible, but will take the easiest route for the campers [and SWMBO] sake! Any map references and further info would also be appreciated.
Cheers!!

Easiest way is via Myrtleford & in on the East Buffalo road, East Rilely road then the Wonnangatta track. Would have no hesitation in towing a camper trailer that route when wet. Only one
river crossing as you enter the valley which is not normally too deep except after recent heavy rain.
West Buffalo route would require you to take Harry Shepards track which is a little steeper and best not done in the wet if you have a nervous passenger ;-)
All other routes in & out of the valley are best left to the experienced driver with a high clearance trailer & a powerful tow vehicle.
Get the Rooftops
Bright to
Mansfield Adventure Map for the best detail.

Craig
My HEMA High Country map shows the East Buffalo Rd which appears to become the Humffray
River track. The Map shows It intersects with the Riley Ck track. Is this what you are refering to?

Hello Sailor ;-) I suspect your Hema map is out of date. I have a 3rd edition and it has many tracks missing or shown open that no longer exhist. As previously mentioned get a copy of the Rooftops
Bright to
Mansfield Adventure Map for the best detail.
At Catherine Station you turn left on the East Buffalo road. You will pass Walshs then the West Humffray tracks on your left & the East/West divide track on your right. 2 kms further you will cross over Selwyn track (great divide). Turning right at the Humffray river
track intersection you will be then on East Riley road. If your map shows Sambar spur at this point throw it away as it no longer exhists. (A new road was cut around the
hill here.)This turns into the Wonnangatta track as you pass Van Dammes. Turn right at Rileys creek track & you drop into the Gatta.
I bet that confused you as I nearly lost myself trying to explain. Pretty staight forward when you are there & fairly
well sign posted.

Hi Craig
Thanks again, and Yep sounds confusing, but I'll get hold of a Rooftops map and that should clear it up.
Next question, best guess at the time the trip should take from Myrtleford to Catherine station, and then from there into the Wonnongatta.
PS Where are you from as you seem to know tis area
well?

It's around a 3 hour drive from Myrtleford to the Homested site, probably just under an hour to Catherine Station depending on how fast you drive & how dusty it is. After alot of traffic it can get pretty bad.
I'm from Benalla & get up that way fairly regular in fact was
clearing tracks with the Wangaratta 4x4 club around Mt Selwyn last weekend.
Unlike the 80's when it was one big bog hole Wonnangatta is an easy drive these days.

In Jan 05 I pulled a CT with Dingy on top (traveling round oz) via
Dargo, Grant, Bulltown Spur, staircase upto the pinical,
licola, Mt
Wellington, Butchers country Tk & all the way to Mt Stirling. The track names may be out of order but a fantastic trip. I have a gutless std 80 series Diesel with a rear locker all on skinnies. I'll have to upload the track.. Have fun.
