Just returned from a late trip to the Cape. Took 6 tourists up over 6 days plus 2 days at the top. Pretty hot and dry with lots of fires thru Lakefield but It was so good to go to Indian Head and Fruit Bat Falls and the Stations and be the only people there. Hardly saw any cars on the road. Had a great group and it was a fantastic trip. They flew out on Friday from Horn Island and I drove home with a local Seisia fisherman to Cairns on Saturday in 12 hours in a petrol 100 Series. Cheers Rob

12 hours? you sound like one of those drivers you just hate to meet head on.

Fair Dinkum you really were pushing it.

I slow down for every oncoming vehicle regardless of size so they don't break my windscreen. As I said there was virtually zero traffic. Cheers Rob

The lack of vehicles would help, and I guess you know the road as well.

I could do Weipa to Cairns and return in 11 hrs each way and that was early in the season when the roads were freshly graded, but the creeks all had water in them and there was allways the first lot of vehicles heading up. I had a V8 Crusier then.

No water anywhere, there had been light rain over night so little dust the road was mostly good, rough in patches of course, Bypas roads all the way and 2 drivers only one fuel stop we just kept on going and were both surprised at the overall time. Cheers Rob

Hi Rob
Returned 3 weeks ago from Mapoon and the road was rough as guts compared to 2 weeks earlier
Corrugations and huge bulldust holes, even saw a Telstra ute that had run up the back of a camper trailer in the bulldust just south of Laura, not a pretty site.
What do you think of the bitumen work going on? Got told by Road Tek worker that the road to Weipa will be sealed by 2010
Cheers Poppy
