We are looking at
camping at
Tewantin beach or Fraser Island between Christmas and New Year or longer. We have a Jayco and kids just wondering which spot to go as ive seen
Tewantin beach very packed or will Fraser be the same?. Don’t really want to go to Fraser as you can't have a fire at all. Any suggestions would be very helpful.
Regards Mark

If you havent "booked" or marked out your spot by now for Noosa to
Rainbow you have an icecubes chance in hell of finding a 1/2 decent spot.

G'day Markcas,
We went up there at that time of year about 10 yrs ago, never, ever again! If you don't mind
camping tent peg to tent peg, no problem. You say you are taking a camper, then if you are still intent on going you better plan on getting there 2 or 3 days before the main holidays start as you will be hard pressed to find enough room for a swag let alone a camper if you don't, and don't be surprised if you wake up in the morning to find them camped under your jayco as it will most likely be the only available patch of sand left!
Not only will it be the crowds you will have to cope with but also the non-stop drunken antics of the permanently 'pi$$ed-and-full-of-bad-manners' w_nk_rs doing doughies amongst the crowds on the hard sand.
Our idea of going
camping is to get AWAY from the crowds, therefore we go inland whenever we go during school or public holidays, too hot you say? head for the mountains! It gets cooler the higher you go.
Avagoodn

Gday markcas,
The noosa north shore and the cooloola section of the great sandy national
park iflat out at both christmas/new years and
easter.The
camping areas in the dunes looks like a car
park and
the beach is like a highway. I live and work around the noosa area and north shore is a great getaway, half hour from home and were pitching the tent, and dont let me stop you from going, just be prepared for the crowd. Get the right neighbours and the whole family will have a great time.
Whgen the kids are playing on
the beach, we would go 100m north of
camp and 100m south and dig and mound big speed humps in the sand to slow down the traffic and tell the kids these speed humps are their
boundary. Most of the drivers respect this and drive acordingly. It is only the yahoos full of p#ss and bad manners that hit
the hump at 100km an hr on a beach with a 80 km speed limit that will get the bleep s.( And better them roll a pay for a new wheel allignment than one of the kids needing the realignment, I think).
I head west in the busy times. Lots of great
places around the connondale ranges with good swimming holes to keep cool in that time of year, without the traffic.
Any questions, happy to help.
merry xmas and appy new year.
scott

I was on Fraser 3 weeks ago and it seems there has been a slight relaxing of the "no fire" rules there. There are a couple of fire rings that can now be used at Dundubara, if you have brought the wood with you. No idea what rules may exist in other
camping areas on the Island.

Hi,
I just had a look at the EPA site and there are still a couple of sites at
Freshwater Campground available between Christmas and New year that are suitable for a camper.
I know it is a couple of hundred metres off
the beach but at least there are dedicated sites with some separation between your neighbours.
Have a look at www.epa.qld.gov.au and select
camping bookings and then select Cooloola. There is an availability calendar you can access at that site.
As the other replies have said it is very busy there at that time of year.

Last time I camped at Fraser around New Years was in 2001. We camped about 10-15mins north of
Eurong, in the dunes (permitted
camping area) Could only see one
camp about 200m to our North. We picked a spot in an area that meant there would be little to no traffic on the high tide, as the wash ran up to the dues, leaving about a 5ft drop off. Was a sensational trip. We just worked our travle around the tides as you do. We were allowed a fire then, but it was pretty warm and we only had a small one if at all.

Just keep in mind that the Island is so vast,
the beach so long, that you will be able to find a spot where you will have a little room for yourself. Dont always believe the "tent peg to tent peg" stories. May have been the case for some, but Its simply too big for that, even with designated
camping areas. Also, if you're taking kids and there are other kids nearby, its not such a bad thing if they can make some freinds also. If that happens, they will have an awesome holiday.

Be prepared for the March flies, at that time.
They seem to be at their worst 10 days after rain at Fraser.

I have been to Double Island for both of the last Australia Day long weekends. First time we stayed in a house at Teewah so the crowds were not a big problem. The next time we managed to secure a little spot on
the beach by sending a car in on the day before the weekend started to set up our
camp site. They said even when they got there the place was pretty busy. However the guy next to us was great. Even let the girls use his spear pump shower (I'm sure he got nothing out of it LOL).
We thought it was funny when we saw the same cars driving up and down
the beach looking for a
campsite.
If you are going for a quiet holiday then forget it. However if you are open to meeting people and enjoying the 'party' atmosphere then you can have a great time.
Often you will get people who will walk up
the beach from campfire to campfire with beer in hand just to have a chat. Can be a lot of fun.

G'day Mark ,
I camped just outside the
Tewantin Township a few years ago at a place called
"
John's Landing " .
This was a privately owned
camping ground that was set up for
camping on the river just west of the
Tewantin Township .
Not sure if it's still operating - but
well worth some investigation .
It was a
great campsite right on the river bank - small fees - did apply at the time .
The campsites were
well spread out for privacy - and you can fish right there on the banks of the river .
Maybe the
Tewantin Tourist Info Centre can shed some light on this ??
Cheer's ,
Disco Td5 .
