Hi All

2 Questions I am sure someone can answer re my 80 series GBox. 1. I have one of those breather/pressure hoses that link my GBox and TCase fillers. Question, do these do anything other than regularly tranfer 2 litres of oil form the GBox to the TCase? If so I may consider removing the new bungs and reinstalling. and 2. Which is the best oil to imrpove cold shift performance, in particular 2nd and 3rd slot. I am currently using Castrol Multitrax - not happy.

Cheers

Wooly,
I dunno how to stop it transfering oil b/w t/case & g/box except for suggesting it may have a blocked breather, allowing it to dump oil into t/case. I can however suggest you use VMX80 grade oil for the shifting issues. Mine suffered the same prob, and auto trans fluid was tried by a mechanic and over time it was changed back to 80/140 grade, then I heard about the 80 grade oil and can now easily get the truck into 2nd even before it's warm.

The only way to stop it transferring oil is to replace the seal between the two.
Get someone who is familiar with the box to check it as the oil transfer problem can be an indication of excessive wear on the transfer input shaft which is big bucks to fix. Failure will lead to NO drive to the wheels.

Gday
Take the hose off...this was a fix for the 60 series that had a seal problem...the 80 has two seperate gearboxes, and if the two seperate seals leaks inbetween,. it will fall on the driveway.
Buy some Castrol vmx-m oil for the 5 speed and you will be smiling :-))

As Dozer says, the transfer hose is the cause of your problems, take it off! Seal leaks on an 80's will drip on the ground not transfer between the boxes.
