To Helpful Four Wheel Drivers,
I am seeking information on two issues and would appreciate comment if people have helpful answers.
1. I have a Toyota twin cab Hilux 3.0 Litre turbo charged diesel utility which is now two years old and has done 18,000km. In the past two years this vehicle has been down the
Simpson Desert north to south commencing in the
Hay River and then ending up on the Birdsvile track in 2005 and in 2004 it travelled down the Cooper to Lake Eyre and onwards. These ventures were through trackless country so the going is slow and often difficult. The trouble has been that the Toyota appears to lose power maybe in the vicinity of 10-20% after the initial 2-3 hours of hard work each day. This phenonmenon appears heat related. Your comments are welcome.
2. In 2006 we plan a trip from
Melbourne to
Alice Springs and to then proceed west north of the McDonell Ranges to a point where we would turn south to the Giles Meteorological Station. From there our proposed route is south along the S.A./W.A. border to
Eucla. Information on the type of terrain, degree of difficulty and whether permits are required etc would be appreciated.
With Thanks,
Gerald R Dickinson

You don't say whethert it has been back to Toyota under warranty and what they dide or said. I had a turbo Prado(same engine) that on a very hot day decided to lose power dramatically. It was a coincedence that it was a hot day as the problem was with one of the solenoids in the injector pump and a changeover pump was fitted. I suppose I am stating the obvious but I assume the entire system fuel wise is standard and that you haven't put on extra or different filters and your filters are clean.

Best of luck getting permissions. I expect you will get turned down, but you can only try.

1. Does your engine have an intercooler?
If so, is it behind the grill and did you use an insect screen?
If both the above are correct that may have some bearing due to reduced airflow.
Cheers

Dear Rosco,
re: Hilux Turbo Diesel
I shall check for the intercooler and blow-out the radiator but I think there is more involved.

Gerry

Alice to
Kintore, relaively easy depending upon weather. The Docker River Road may be difficult to get a permit, not sure if they have reopened that one yet. There's a few pix of the area at </a

Gerry, I know that some here have had problems with permits in the past , but I have found those issueing them to be more than friendly and helpful in a timely manner. Don't forget that you may need permits from more than one mob, depending upon where you're actually off to. Also the police and council at
Kintore can tell you the current conditions of the roads in that region. I found them to be most friendly and helpful. Have a great trip, and try and post some pix when you get back. It's a great area that few get to appreciate.

Thanks for the comments and encouragement Footloose.
We are keen to do more investigation now and start early re: the permits.
Shall keep your address for forwarding some shots. Our alternative if there are big rains in the Channel Country is to boat down the Kallapookah
Creek to Lake Eyre and back up the
Warburton.

Maybe one of our readers here is a Constitutional Lawyer but I was under the impression that the Constitution prohibits anyone from restricting access from one state to another (Freedom of Trade) As I understand it, it makes a mockery of the requirement to get a permit when travelling from one state to another as that then restricts that access.

alot of this country is blocked off whether it be the
woomera prohibited area, Aboriginal land, Pastoral leases. or perma pine barriers on tracks by CALM, sure access can often be obtained But I sure feel alot less restricted when travelling VCL or abandoned sections of station

Gerald
I just bought the new Turbo Diesel Hilux love it heaps of power, however for any help with diesel motors if your in queensland or at least the south east of queensland Highway Diesel at Coopersplains is excellent (Phone 3277 5805) I had an 80 series standard with a 1hz in it, I had the fuel pump rebuit and modified to offer more power and consistent fuel economy, futhermore i had extractors and an exhaust system on the cruiser, heped heaps.
The 3.0l motor is a pearler i a lux and responds
well to enhancements that are not designed for idiots to do burnouts, we are talking about simple engine enhancments that allow the motor to run more efficient. Talk to the experts you only have one year left on your warranty so who cares toyota won't give you any more power.

Thanks for your comments on the Turbo Diesel Hilux - I shall phone Coopersplains for a chat and possibly access a recommendation for a like-garage here in Victoria.
Thanks
