I went over to Moreton last week for 5 days, not nearly long enough, how good is it! It was my first trip to the Island and we camped north of Cowan Cowan. On the way over on the barge it was packed with 4x4's and people and I thought that the beaches and tracks would be busy too, but when you get off the barge everyone just disappears into bush. The trip has renewed my faith in the human race again, everyone has the time to have a chat or just smile and give a wave, there was no agro, no late night parties or noise from other
camp sites (not that I would have heard anyway). The fishing is also too good, my first 4 casts on the first night landed me a whiting each time, it's just not sport when it's that easy.
I haven't been to Frazer so I can't compare the two but I will be hard pressed to find something to beat what I just saw. Bring on March 06 when I'll put aside 10 days.

Mate, if all future vistors have the same attitude as the ones I saw, and abide by the Rangers request and look after the island, I'm sure my son (2 & 1/2 y.o.) and his kids will see what I saw. The small impact made by people and their 4x4's has and will do nothing to change the island from it's natural state. :) I can't wait to go again.
One sight I did see that made me laugh was on the return barge trip home everyone goes crazy upstairs in the
shop. Hot pies, sauceage rolls chocolate (my mrs) and icey cold beer, I guess everyones is at varrying degrees of withdrawl and just can't help themselves. Usually by then your ice box has turned into just a "box" and you'll do anything to get a coldie.

No, no ,no your mistaken you were at Fraser Island NOT
Moreton Island, Moreton is a horrible place nobody should go there, everone should go to Fraser. he he he (evil LOL)
The truth is Moreton is pretty much still the same as it was 30 years ago, which is very nice of course, this is what Fraser Island WAS like back then too, but sadly Fraser has been loved to death & is not a patch on it's former self now for campers. So naturally we would like to keep Moreton just the way it is, & not encourage the hoards of tourists to change it into another Frasier or
Double Island Point. ahh!!! those were the days.
Cheers. (This thread will self destruct in 3, 2, --???)

That is interesting .. I just had 4 days on Moreton, came off there and drove up for another 5 days on Fraser. I am a regular to Fraser and went to Moreton on the advice of a friend.
We did not do that
well fishing, but then we don't do any good at Fraser either, so that was no surprise. But Moreton is pretty, and quiet, and not too crowded (we were there mid-week), but on the Saturday morning we were pulling our, our site at Ben Ewa started filling up so we figured we were getting out at the right time.
I found the soft sand driving fairly wearing after 4 days ... despite there having been a fair bit of rain. I have decided that my presonal preference is Fraser, mainly because it is bigger and you have more
places and sights to see, which is the main reason that I go there.
Still, a very pretty place, and I am glad I went and saw it, but don't think I need to do it again.
Cheers
Jack

The thing I liked about Moreton was the fact that there are no dingos. I have 2
young kids and that issue worries me a bit with Fraser. The other is there are no back pack filled troopies to invade you privacy. These are only my peceptions on Fraser as I haven't been there yet.

Johno,
Yes it is a great spot. We went for the first time in September for a week and we are going back again next Thursday.
We stayed at Ben Ewa and will probably go there again. If it is full we will head for Comboyuro.
Fraser and Moreton are different
places each with their own feel and in my book both are great. We like Moreton as from where we live in
Brisbane, we can be on the barge in about 30 minutes and then a bit over an hour later we are on the island.
Really pleased you liked it.

Now you've really let the secret out, Alloy! Was hoping all the new arrivals would be staying over on the western side...
Indeed a great place, Moreton. It was after being introduced to the island in 2000 that we decided we really did need a 4WD! - and shortly afterwards our Moreton Marauder (1977 ex-Army Land Rover Series III ute - unstoppable!!) was part of the family.
We've been back once or twice a year ever since and usually
camp at
Blue Lagoon. One disappointment is the ever rising price of the
camping and driving permits and the ever falling levels of maintenance provided by Qld NPWS. When we first went to
Blue Lagoon we were impressed with the quality and cleanliness of the amenities block (albeit cold showers, but every shower had a chain to hang your shower bag from). On our last visit, we were disappointed by the shabby state of the facilities - almost non-existent cleaning, plenty of broken/rusted fitting and only one shower (M or F) with the remains of a shower bag chain still intact. And, as mentioned, the fees had gone up considerably.
Also, be aware that the island is popular for school camps. If you want solitude, it my pay to enquire whether there are any school groups booked in at your preferred
camping area.
But, these are all just minor irritants in any otherwise wonderful place.

Thanks for the reply, have you ever stay at yellow patch/
north point? When I was there it looked to be an excellent spot, pretty much the furtherst point away form the west coast, so crowds weren't an issue and close to a
bore water pump for filling up the solar shower.

Hi Johno,
No, we've not camped at Yellow Patch or nearby. Would be a good pozie if the south-easterlys were making the eastern side a bit unpleasant, though. Always seemed a bit busy when we've driven past that area - but then sometimes we've had
Blue Lagoon to ourselves and sometimes it's been busy too.
Let's hope we can all continue to enjoy this marvellous place, so close to a capital city.

Growing up in Qld and going to Fraser and Moreton seems to be a tradition now, Moreton and fraser and in my opinion are two of the best spots in Queensland, however don't right off Fraser, personally I still think Fraser has the edge on moreton especially in the winter months. As for the dingoes, kids have to be supervised at all times on an island like fraser or moreton, they have more chance of being hit by a car than bitten by a
dingo. As kids there was a rubbish dump on Fraser and the dingoes never really posed a problem, for those that can remember there was always a lone
dingo to meet you at the barge at
hook point. As far as people are concerned try moreton in school holidays impossible, to many people, all victorians enjoying queenslands weather. (Just a joke)

i'm sorry. i'm a fraser person rather than Moreton.
Bigger and better in my personal opinion. More to do.
Central station camp ground is better and safer since upgrade a few years ago.
a bit of eye candy as
well with the european backpackers
