I was told by the local Service Manager today that there have been cases reported of GU4 owners modifying their dummy stop/tail lamps and fitting globes to them and using the wiring loom already provided by Nissan but unused in Australia to get these lamps working. The problem is apparently that as these dummy lamps are designed to only "fill up the hole" and not to actually operate, as such they have no heat reflectors in them and some have melted and caught fire. Something to be aware of. The proper original lamps fitted in NZ, UK, Africa, and just about everywhere else except Australia are available from Nissan but cost about $250.00 each retail.

I have converted my 2005 GUIV tail lights (see post ID 26052) and have had no problems at all, if they are not the real thing as the Service Manager suggests, why do Nissan themselves put the reversing light in the left hand side. I believe that they are just trying to get $500 out of you. I have seen the ones from Nissan and they are no differrent than the ones that come in the vehicle except that they have the holes in them for the lamps and the top red lens is not fitted.
Mine have been working now for a few months and I have just checked them and they are fine.
As I said above check out the post and save yourself $500.
Cheers

Yeah thanks for that Trekker. I had already seen your post and was wondering how effective the indicators are since you fitted amber globes but still have the red lenses? What colour are they actually when in use? I also have seen the genuine assemblies. I am not sure if the composition of the plastic is any different but the genuine ones do seem to have a more "jewelled" appearance. The dummy ones have a pinker looking plastic rather than a deep rich red. I assumed as they are not designed to actually have globes fitted they probably make them as cheaply as possible. I know the local Service Mgr pretty
well and he wouldn't really give a s... if I bought the genuine ones or not so I believe what he has passed on to me and if it is factual I just thought it may help others to be aware of it. Peters led idea is a good one. Would reduce the load on the wiring as
well which presumably was sized for only two lamps assy's not four. Maybe the reason they are OK for the reverse lamp is that it would not normally be operating for long periods (unless you lost all forward gears and had to reverse home:-) Don't laugh I have a friend who actually had to do that once. Not in a Nissan of course. Thanks again.

If you are really worried about the heat put some LED globes in, no heat at all then.
It won't matter that they are not ADR compliant either as the ones in the bumper are still in situ

I think that you may not have realised from my post on the tail lights that I actually removed the inner red lens, You have to do this otherwise the amber globe will look red.

Thanks 4x4Trekker. No I didn't realise you had done that. I was wondering why you went to all that trouble to pull them apart & not just drill the holes and shove some globes in them. The exterior plastic on
mine looks red though. Is that just the colour of the inner lens showing through and is the outside lens actually clear?
