Gday i've thrown 35inch bf gooddies on my 2002 3lt nissan patrol with factory alloys and it is impossible to get the spare on the rear wheel carrier has anyone faced this problem. My father in-law is nutter and is keen to cut the rear wheel carrier then weld plates on it to pack it up 50mm and out 60mm. It is possible but surely there is a product i can buy and bolt on.

Rayno,
Kaymar supply an adapter to lift the spare tyre when fitting their rear bar with no wheel carrier. I dont know if you can buy one seperately or if it will allow for 35'S but you can only ask.

Hi Rynao,

I have 33" tyres but had a similair problem. While you obviously need to go out for the extra width, do you need actually need to go up as well?

If you don't need to go up, the easiest fix is to simply put a 20mm spacer (or 60mm in your case, but this seems too much) between the wheel carrier and the rear door on the 4 bolts holding the carrier on. I changed the 4 bolts from 40mm in length to 60mm to allow for the spacer. It would be easiest to try this method before cutting and welding your rear carrier.

Note that having a bigger/heavier tyre and then adding spacers will add additional strain to the rear door and there has been many cases of cracked hinges/welding when this has been done.

Cheers

Captain

kaymar makes a spare wheel spacer specifically for the GU. it's also height adjustable. I have one. It even has a camp light adaptor on it.

35" easy. i would give spacers a miss if you're going to climb on it to access a roof rack???

I've seen what happens on corrugation with spacers. It's not hard to imagine.

Just one minor point. If your Nissan alloys are 8" wide (mine are) you may find the 35" tyres (which are illegal in WA anyway as they exceed the legal dia increase) will be too wide for the rims in which case you will very likely split the rims apart. Get hold of a Tyre & Rim Association manual (all reputable tyre stores will have one) and that will tell you the min rim width for your 35's.

if they are 12.5's they will be fine on an 8inch rim.

According to the Tyre & Rim Association manual for 12.5's you need a min rim width of 8.5" with the optimum size being 10". Also it does not list any 35's narrower than 12.5 but that is not to say they are not made.

Hows it going Ryan,

I have BFG 285/75r16 tyres fitted , I packed out my rear wheel spacer with nylon pads ( 3 thicknesses of nylon chopping board ) that are the same size as the part of the wheel carrier that comes into contact with the door normally and got some bolts that were proportionally longer.

Last year I did a large trip with a lot of off dirt road driving and also used the wheel to access the roof rack every day for 4 months with no ill effects, I am wondering if the troubles others have had are caused by packing the carrier out with washers .

I have heard ARB also have a braket available , my friend said it was $90 , apparently lifts the wheel a bit as well.

If you are worried about the stress of a much larger / heavier tyre on your rear door you could get a rear wheel carrier / bar.

Hope this helps .

Glenn.

315/75R16 which is a 35" OD tyre have always been legal on 8" rims.
Also as a side note.... 35x12.50R15 where previously having 8.5" minimum, have been cleared for use on 8-11" rims by the 2005 Tyre and Rim Association book.

Cheers,
Ryano
