Hey ppl,
Can anyone give me an answer to a couple of questions about GPS.

1. In the great series of mag's from the writers of "Western 4W driver" - "4wd days out of Perth" etc. they put in GPS waypoints in the format of mN and mE eg. 752 909mE 6 534 618mN (with that spacing too). How do I convert that to Degree's Minutes, seconds for use in my moving map proggie of choice (GPS Tuner). Or just let me know what that format is called so I can google for it.

2. For GPS Tuner it wouldn't read the ECW format from the NATMAP Raster sets, also in the SHEETS set some of the maps aren't 100% straight. So I used the 250k Full Aussie map on the cd, and some software (free) called ER Viewer that allows you to view large maps (any size) and manually exported Australia as sliced up sections (all 100% straight) then manually calibrated them in the free software from the GPS Tuner ppl (then sliced them up using that same software - for use on my PDA).
So, the question is, was there an easier way? Without buying both Ozi versions.

HI there.

1 change the mode in your GPS to UTM and then input the coordinates to the GPS in UTM mode, then change back to degrees minutes and seconds and the GPS does the work for you easy peasy.

2 hmm whats a GPS Tuner?

That won't work. I use a bluetooth GPS mouse with a PocketPC (PDA) and software - GPS Tuner is the software.
I export the maps from the NATMAP Raster set, calibrate them (Lat/Lon) and them slice them up into managable chunks for the PocketPC (that last bit is done by software on the PC first).

GPS Tuner does a lot of what Ozi Explorer does, moving map, waypoints, compass, etc. I prefer it to Ozi.

However, waypoints etc on my software need to be in LAT/LON, and 4WDriver waypoints are all in UTM.

Are you sure Bonz's suggestion wont wont work? From GPS TUNER Help File

"GPS/Setup option. Unit Here you can choose between Metric, Imperial and Nautical units. According to your unit type, all data will be converted and displayed into the right format. Coordinates Choose between WGS84 (Lat/Lon) or UTM coordinate."

Adding waypoint There are several ways to create a waypoint. Select GPS/Manager/Waypoint/Add new and type all necessary data.

I assume that once you change the format of the coordinates in the setup that it applies to format used for inputting waypoints...but as I dont use the program I wouldnt know.

Cheers
Greg

If this does in fact not work then suggest you use a program such as
EasyGps
which allows input of UTM data and then save it as GPX file which can be imported into GPStuner.

Tried that, seems you need ExpertGPS ($$) to use UTM.
EasyGPS doesn't support changing the co-ordinates to UTM.

Hello again - it appears, since GPSTuner doesnt use ecw files or geotiffs (which you can also create with erviewer with calibration included), that the method you are using is the best way possible to cut up the Natmap Mozaic (as far as I know). Gps tuner looks quite good especially with respect to its geocaching facilities. The greatest drawback from initial inspection (compared to OziExporerCE) appears to be the map compatability/calibration...too much work involved for widely availalble maps (eg calibrated ecw/geotiffs) that are already calibrated but in a format it can not use. Email them and tell them to get their act together.
Cheers

Oh bl**dy h*ll that worked! I assumed the software on the PDA would be the same as the software they give you to setup waypoints and maps on the PC (before transferring to the _Permanent_Painted_Coatings.aspx) and that software only wanted LAT/LON.

You're right, the _Permanent_Painted_Coatings.aspx does accept UTM. A bit fiddly on the virtual keyboard but Done. Dusted. Sorted.

Thanks Bonz/Explorer, I should have RTFM before posting.

I've duly emailed them Explorer :-)
