just wondering what negative effect a buggered return to centre steering damper will cause. We are getting a bad shake through the steering wheel only occasionly. Its not wheel balance and occurs after hitting a bump on road.Vehicle is a hzj75 troopy.

On my troopy the steering damper once broke off altogether. Found the vehicle was quite undrivable at speeds over 20kmh and had severe wobbles when hitting a bump on the road even at low speed. It took a long time to crawl to the nearest 4WD shop to get a replacement damper fitted, luckily it was in town and not out bush somewhere.
So. I would say your guess is right, get it fixed asap.

Just before a big trip - It thought I'd get mine replaced - as I had seen oil pouring out of it for some time before - and knew it probably wasn't doing much. After replacing it - I notice no difference at all.

Also - while working on a station in NT - I was driving at 75 series cab around every day - there was no damper to be found -and it drove quite smoothly. One day the station manager decided to put a new damper on it - I noticed no difference whatsoever. A termite mound a week later saw it totally ripped off again!

I think it depends on the vehicle - if a damper really makes a lot of difference - then maybe theres other problems afoot. Perhaps the damper is fixing the symptoms of these problems?
