I installed a Repco (chi) winch on a Patrol Gu 3.0TDi (05) on the weekend. Almost blew the whole weekend. If anybody is interested in some of the pitfalls/problems - I will happy to share them. Put it this way - the language got pretty hot at times!!!

Fred my 9,500 lf went on on my ARB bar last Friday. Not a hitch, 2.5 hrs from start to finish. Mounted the control box on the top of the bull bar by taking the supplied mounting bracket off and drillin through the base plate & bolting direct to the bull bar.
Had to turn the winch 90 drgreed so that mounting bolts matched the bar which means the clutch handel is now in a bugger of a place to get to but for the money it is still worth it.

Rule 1 Hughesy - when the temperary winch system setup to lift the winch in place decides to fall down - make sure you get your leg out of the way !!!
Vince, I don't like to make things easy by using an ARB bar. I used the standard alloy bar. I guess if I charge my time out at $100 per hour you are way in front.
Cheers

Fred
The best system for holding
mine in place whilst mounting were my two sons who couldn't wait to show how strong they were.

Hi Fred
I take it the alloy bar had the Steel cradle to hold the winch? otherwise wont the winch will pull through the alloy?

Fred I cheated with holding the bar up. Used a
fork lift in the Warehouse at work. No use being the boss if you can;t get some use now and again

I was told you can't use an alloy bar with a winch. I have an 8000 warn sitting in the shed that I would really love to put on the patrol but with an alloy bar I thought it was not on.
Pick me, I want to hear more.

Had an 89 Pajero with an alloy bar and had an 8000lb winch fitted. Had the steel cradle fitted (from Opposite Lock -
Brisbane), and never had a problem with using the winch. Without the steel cradle believe it would have simply ripped through the alloy bar. Wasn't too expensive from memory

I mounted the 9500 winch on a steel plate (10mm thick) which is mounted on the chassis rails. The only pressure on the bar will be through the rollers. The winch book says that a 6mm plate would do. The plate is sercured with 3 bolts each side to the rails. I had to jiggy a few things to make it all fit but no real dramas. The problem was the control box which only fitted by attaching it to the plate. I also had to rotate the clutch 90 degrees so now it is very easy to get to through one of the front vents. Also had to raise the number plate a touch. Did this by screwing it in from the bottom not the top using the same holes. As an absolutely non-mechanic I reckon it is OK.

Fred,
So what do I have to do to rotate the clutch. Don"t tell me that I have to take the bar back off. This is why it only took me 2.5 hours, I missed a step.

That's the bad news Vince. To rotate the clutch you have to first undo the 2 allen bolts holding the thing together then pull the clutch off and there are about 12 smaller allen bolts that have to be taken off. You then just dismantle the thing and turn it whichever way you want and put it all together again. Much easier on a work bench. It had to be done otherwise I would not have been able to engage the clutch because of lack of sapce.
Good luck!
