With any luck i will have a Barret 250 sitting at the post office when i come on break. Next trick will be to fit it, I have seen 100 series with them under the passenger seat but I am unsure if it will fit with the 80 - Any other ideas?

Have a Codan in an 80. Box goes on the cargo barrier in front of the Engel. Welded a bracket onto the rear wheel carrier to carry the aeriel. Works well

Same as previous post, Wouldn't rwecomend putting it under the seat due to sand & Dirt.

My only concern was that it would be subject to alot more vibration on the cargo barrier. Another thought was on the cargo barrier behind the back seat (again room could be an issue) Hidden and hard to remove would be a decided advantage for a vehicle that gets left under a carport out the back 2 weeks out of 3

Hello - arent they sealed enough from "dust and sand" (well Codans are) - can understand water getting in but nothing else to the extent that it would be a problem. Use to mount ours on the side of rear storage area in 80s (just below window), not ideal and in view so not Davoe's preffered choice. Cant think of any options besides those suggested - either up in view or down out of sight but greater potential to get wet - how deep are the rivers out at Kal:)
Cheers

Davoe,I have a Codan 7727 (an oldie but a goodie) and I have placed this on the cargo barrier but made up a wooden box frame at both sides and joined these together. That way top and bottom on the unit is protected. I have also included foam inside the box section so that the unit actually rests against the foam and this helps with the vibrations. The sides on the unit are open. Bit hard to explain but if you need any further clarification let me know.

Depends on whether it's a remote head or a local. Local have to go in the front with you somewhere, they're difficult. Remote usually has head where you can see it and the box in the rear or hung from the cargo barrier....you do have one don't you ? Aerials are either whips or autotunes. Whips are often mounted on the bullbar in the eastern states anyway. Autotunes are usually mounted on the rear for legal reasons....that's not where they work best but oh well.
If you mount the box under a seat not only do you get all the dust etc all over it, but also run the risk of drownding it if you find a hole that's deeper than you thought.

Barret 250 is remote head jobbie. Ariel will be whip on the roobar so I dont forget to take it off for bush tracks, deepest water crossing I get to do in the goldfields at the moment is when i wash the car but the cargo barrier seems to be getting all the votes at the moment although this will lead to running the cable forward for the remote head - Do you rip up your vinyal and put it underneath??

I have an 80 series that had a double DIN radio. I had this radio remove and had a CD/radio installed. My HV radio sits in the same hole under the CD/radio. They must both be single DIN to fit.

I have a single tape deck in that hole and have rigged a stash tray underneath it which i find quite handy. I was thinking of putting the remote head on the tunnel in front of the seat and behind the gear lever

For your info...we have had a Barret mounted under the passenger seat of our '98 80 series for about 5 years now without a hiccup at all.

The head is on the centre console in front ot of the shift levers which is very accessible and the auto-tune is mounted on the spare wheel carrier between the wheel & the body.

If you are interested give me a email address & i'll shoot off a couple piccies.

Regards

Neil.

I forgot to mention Davo, unless you are only intending to use the Barret while stationary I would suggest putting the supplied whip away and keeping it for a backup. Buy the replacement whip which is 3 or 4 times stronger & can be left installed for all but low tree traversing. (not a lot of that in the goldfields lol).

Well worth the $90 cost.

Neil.

The ariel i will be buying is a vks multitap and the radio doesnt come with an antenae. I intend to have the ariel removed most of the time as even with the spring bases they still snap. There is actually nearly all low tree territory in the fields as we have 16% of australias eucalypts in the region. For work we would only put the ariels on when needed as they just wouldnt survive

Davoe, I have my Codan 8558 under the passenger seat with a remote head around the altimiter etc. Previous to that I had an amateur HF box in the same location. Not an issue with dust & dirt. Mounting on the cargo barrier seemed to me to make it more vulnerable to damage from items inside the car. Also consider cable routes etc. my cabling runs through the chassis rails where possible or the trims etc.
RF earthing is most important - antenna, radio & head. Torriodal cores or ferrite beads around cables entering the radio can help with RF feedback etc.
I have some pictures of my setup at http://www.qsl.net/vk3cat in the mobile page.
Cheers Tony.

Davoe- I stuck mine between the inside trim and rear quarter panel in the boot. My only concern is that on a water crossing, If I park in deep water I am cactus.

If you take out the plastic trim panel on the RHS of the boot, there is a pretty big area you can use for hiding a radio. There is a conduit channel running the length of the inside of the car just inside the RHS doors (unclip the door protective steps to get into it) and the grommet on the front of the firewall has a few spare nipples to get power and aerial wires thru. Try and avoid running wires down the centre of the car because of driveline interference.

Under the window on the right of the boot, I had a factory speaker sitting on a galv frame which fixed to the body in 3 places. I tek screwed on the HF radio cradle to this and it all fits in place nicely, is well hidden and cables are hidden and protected.

The other option I am still looking at is removing the rear grab handles above the boot windows and putting in a fixed shelf just under the roof for this stuff and a PC.

My old 6924 Codan stands behind the centre console ockey strapped to the console. Should I sink the truck in a creek I could quickle grab it and the Satphone and jump into a life raft....lol

Now and then I may listen to VKS but on the whole it just sits there waiting to be used in anger.

Hahahahahahaha....who the hell would want to steal dinosaur technology. Most of these radios are in museums

Its like the bloke in the USA who tried to get rid of his Ford Pinto. He left it in a popular shopping mall car park with the windows open and the keys in it. Three weeks later it was still there...untouched

Nothing wrong with a 6924 Willem. Not many 1969 vehicles work as well after they've done as many kms as some of those radios.

Davoe,

In my dual cab I have the transceiver of the HF Radio (was 9323 but changing to NGT at present) behind the back seat and the remote head up front.

I've seen antenna's left in place and the tip tied back to the snorkel flexing the antenna down and out of the way of obstacles but able to be raised if needed. Radio can still be left on scan / selcall watch (if fitted) that way too.

Willem when I moved into the caravan at the pistol club as caretaker it was after about 3 break ins so i went down to the 2nd hand shop and bought a tv and video i thought no one would take. The video had the front panel busted off and no remote - you couldnt have given it away at the pub. Came back from the movies and they had taken my brand new (but fairly cheap akai) stereo off of the video and flogged it - Many of the locals here were born to steal and they dont care what it is
