Gday,

I have noticed a while back when braking a thud comes from the front somewhere, I must have heard it 20times in 8000km. You can feel it too. Any ideas what this could be? I could never replicate the sound even under severe braking? Its most prominant in the mornings.

Took it into the "Agents" and they tampered around and could not find a fault, the next day everytime I tap on the brakes it clucks, if I slowly apply them I wont hear it.

Took it back and he says its something to do with the way the pads are aligning and they have no way of fixing it? Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

BTW Nebster, please send me a e-mail or give your e-mail I need to contact you.

Bryan,
If the noise is only there when the vehicle is cold, I would suggest its the pads mate. Some pads sit slightly loose in their calipers when things are cold. Once they get hot, they naturally expand and sit tight inside the caliper. That would be the first thing i would take a very close look at. Also possibly could be the calipers themselves OR the mounting bolts being worn or loose.
Its not uncommon for some pads to sit a tad loose inside the calipers, (I am refering to aftermarket mainly) but once the heat gets into them, they expand and tighten up which in turn will stop the noise until things cool down again.

I am amazed that they told you there is nothing they can do about it...thats just a cop out mate. They can do something to stop the noise, anything from replacing the pads to modifying the way they sit in the caliper, if your vehicle is new, get back to them and speak to the service manager about the noise, Dont just accept what they tell you..NEW CARS DONT MAKE CLUNKS !!! ..or if they do, the dealer has to fix it.....its simple.

I had a thud in my 80 Series a while back and it turned out to be a missing (yes .. missing) caliper bolt. Was lucky to get a replacement in quick time. So I would be taking a close look at the bolts and make sure they are firm. Brake pads, as explained earlier, could also be a clue.

I had exactly the same thing happen on my 80 series about 6 weeks ago. I arrived at my farm and had a funny noise when I pushed the brakes at low speed. It took me a while but finally discovered the bottom bolt from the brake calliper had gone. When the brake was pushed the calliper kicked out at the bottom and rubbed on the rim. I stole one of the bolts holding the tow hook on the front and put it in the calliper. It's still in there.

Bit embarrassing, but when I was mmuuuccccchhh younger, my EH ute developed a clunk each time I accellerated. After much searching, testing 'U' joints, Gearbox bearings, etc, I pulled the seat forward to look for something behind and found a full can of Coke, which would just roll slowly as I accellerated and hit the rear wall of the cab. Hhhhmmmmm!

BTW, good luck finding your problem.

Happy trails, Mike.

Just a quick update, I'm not very technically clued up when it comes to vehicles, I can do the basic maintanence. Climbed underneath to change gearbox and Tcase oils, while I was under the vehicle I had a look at the left brake that was making this so called "normal" noise. The steel thing? that holds the pads in (presume caliper?) has a big bolt missing a fairly big one I might add.

I checked the right side caliper and it had both bolts. These bolts are marked with a "11" and I presume they rather important. Is this likely my problem?

Cant believe a Toyota "mechanic" could not see this!

That sounds like your problem Bryan.

As mentioned above, a couple of us have had this same issue on Landcruisers. We are lucky that they design it in such a way that the wheel will usually hold the calliper somewhere close to where it should be and it will make sounds like this to make us go looking before it falls off right when we need it to work and results in something major.

It is worth sometimes just lying under your truck for 10 minutes every now and then. You can often pick up on issues before they get serious.

Bryan ... I'd say the mechanic didn't even look.
