Ad in latest 4wd monthly magazine offers a camper trailer top for $1600 to fit to your 7 * 5 trailer supplied by Primus Aus. Rang the sales number quoted in the mag and they could not tell me who I could ring to get a look at one or to talk about them. Has anyone seen one, or know who I might be able to talk to about them.

Or for that matter, any other suppliers who can offer a similar product for that sort of money? Considering a top of the range two room family tent made of heavy material costs under $2000 it seems odd that a camper top cannot be made available for less than $3300.

Any comments appreciated. David

There are a few CT builders that you can buy just the Camper pack for your own trailer. Redback Campers are one.

Prices from $3300 to $5000 depending on size etc.

I have heard about these Primus CT tops for a while now , but no, I haven't seen one first hand.

Made in China I believe.

That may or may not be a bad thing , not everything from China is junk. The Problem I see , is it being built to a price ?

Its not quite the same as handing over $100 for a Chinese copy of a Gennie, or Air Compressor. $1600 in anyones book is still a fair whack of money. I would wont to know there is a reasonable amount of quality in it , so you could get 5-10 years out of it.

I HOPE they are good, because I think the idea has merit , as an cheap entry for a lot of people into CTing.

Haven't heard any reports at all on them yet.

Didn't Primus market COI tents? They were very good quality.

They did yes.

COI was New Zealand from memory , but apparently , they no longer make their own and have them made elsewhere.

Did a little research and found a few things.

The CT is made from

Specifications
* 340g/m2 poly cotton canvas roof and awning
* 250g/m2 poly cotton canvas walls

Description: 12ft Camper Trailer Tent
Tent Size: 360 x 175cm
Awning Size: 535 x 230cm
Centre Height: 230cm
Wall Height: 194cm (left) 175cm (right)
Weight: 50kgs

Which is the same canvas as their cheaper touring tents

Traveller
This Red Desert touring tent is the ideal selection for those who require overnight stays or short holidays. this design allows the user to quickly erect the tent with it's simple 1 centre pole in as little as 2 minutes. It easily folds away in the handy storage bag in minutes.

Part No Description

920035 Size: 260 x 260 x 210cm
Material: Polycotton Blend
Roof: 340g/m2
Walls: 340g/m2
Side Windows: Yes
Rear Windows: Yes
Window Mesh: Ultra fine
Floor: Heavy Duty PE
Zips: No. 5 & 8
Poles: Cadmium Plated
Weight: 14.5kg

Their good quality Touring tents have the following specs

Lightning Touring Tent
All COI Touring Tents are manufactured using Australian made "Billabong" 10oz canvas and floors are constructed from heavy duty P.V.C. which is reinforced with polyester mesh.

Now, I cant say for certainty what 340g/m2 is compared to 10oz Canvas , but , I have SEEN the tents described , and IMO, the Canvas on the CT is WAY too light.

OzTrail have just bought out a camper top that retails for around the $2100. It is in their latest brochure but does not appear on there Website. Unsighted we have sold two from the brochure and have three on order. ETA from OzTrail is about 2 weeks. Email David or myself if you would like a brochure sent out. They fit on a 7 * 5 trailer and we are also working on a design for Trail Bike riders.

There on the primus website, the main problem would be matching your trailer height to your tent wherea sit's easier to match a custom tent height to your existing trailer .

I saw the Red Rock stuff at the Sandown show and they are using the Primus tent top on their campers.

The canvas specs may appear normal but the feel and transparency was far inferior than compared to other exhibitors at the same show.

You always get what you pay for and this top was ordinary.

Other things I noticed was the board under bed was flimsy, the mattress thin & soft, flywire windows looked like a strong wind would blow them out.
