Gday mate, if the thumping noise sounds or feels like its coming from under your feet i would suggest that you may need new body mounts "spacers". A very common GQ problem.

Wilko,

My 89 GQ did that. I had probs with both body mounts and panhard rod bushes.

If the steering vibrates as well as the thumping noise I would definately start with the panhard rod bushes. I chased that vibration for a couple of years and spent a lot of money not getting it fixed. Eventually a guy in Nyngan found the problem, $50 later and it was fixed.

My GQ had a body lift kit and had a tendency to snap bolts, could have been interesting. They were quite easy to replace as were the bubber bushes in the lift kit. Check the mounts just behind the front bumper and the ones under teh 'B' pillar. They are the ones I had trouble with.

Have similar problem with 94 GQ. Replaced Radius arm rear bushes but noise still there when in wet conditions. Will have a look at body mounts soon.

Thanks guys for your input. Ive had the radius arm bushes replaced also, so it must be the body mount bushes, I just hope its not a big job.

You will be looking at $400 for the 10 mounts and there are 3 different numbers ,
6 of one and 2 of each of the others.
