Hi guys,

It has been a while since I've been on, but this is likely to be the best place to ask.

I'm in the market for tyres and am considering Cooper Discoverer AT/R's. One place I have

oops ... fat finger syndrome

... anyway... one place I have been to claims that the Coopers are hard to balance and they get a lot of claims that the tyres vibrate.

I know there's a lot of Cooper users here. So guys, is there any truth to that claim? Is it true of the AT/R's?

I somehow don't think so, but wouldn't mind some feedback.

I have the Discoverer AT’s been on for 25000k’s; they where balanced when first put on, Have been rotated once and have never had a problem.

Rotated once in 25,000kms? Hope you never have a warranty claim!
They are very pedantic in regard to claims, tried to say I ran the wrong pressures, trouble was I got my tyre dealer to ring them for advice re pressures, I also kept a log during our trip.

Hey Savvas,

I'd go to a different tyre fitter.

I have a GU which has always had a sensitive front end. It had a tendency to wobble or vibrate around 100km with the original tyres on it. It was never bad but it often didn't feel great. Anyway had a set of Cooper ST/C's fitted and haven't thought about the touchy front end since. The same guy fitted the BFG AT/R's that were on before the Coopers and I had no probs with them 'least not in that way anyhow.

I have a set of ATR's on my 120 series Prado and they are the best $'s I've spent yet. No issues with vibration or whatever you are being told about. I have 3 other family members who also run ATR's on their vehicles, and all are very happy. For an All terrain tyre I would find it hard to go past these. They perform brilliantly in a ture all round sense. I'm sure other ATR users will agree.

As far as balance goes, these things have been superb !!! and as far as retention of pressure they are also very good. I think maybe the guy you are talking to may have an agenda to sell more of another brand??? BF Goodrich All Terrains are probably the only other tyre I would consider. I went for the Coopers because of the "nothing but good news" I had heard, and the fact I got them for $50.00 per tyre cheaper than the BF's. I'd go to another dealer.

I've got 285/75/16 ATR's on a 105 cruiser been there about 12 months around 20000km still look like new, never touched them since new, other than pressure when sand driving of course, I love them. Made much the same comment to somebody I was trying to sell the cruiser to on sunday, who said crap. He had the same tyres on a patrol and they looked shocking, all chiped halve the tread of mine, he thought mine were brand new, I thought his tyres are old, and his only had 10000km on them, told him them back. Like I said I love them and will be buing set for the prado soon.

Savvas (Big D here)

I've heard the same about Coopers, but only about the more agressive ones which break and shed lugs. My AT/Rs won't lose a lug, they don't stick out enough and they are too big and wide with smaller spaces, and the little grooves (can't rememebr what they are called, sipes I think) keep them really flexible. Completely smooth on the road, no vibrations after about 10000 kms. That's on a Jack too which we all know can have afew problems keeping alligned and balanced on front.

See you back there

D-Jack

Hi Savvas
ST's on the Paj (40k) and ATR's on the Feroza (10k) and no problems of any kind. Would not hesitate to refit Coopers.

Am happy as with ATR on Prado. Some minor chipping at Whyalla but it was pretty punishing stuff driving over rocks and up a canyon.

No issues at all with vibration or balancing. My tyre place rotates them free of charge every 5,000km and it just feels so smooth. Graet grip and quiet on the road. No compalints off road. May not be as good as a full Mud tyre but seem a good all rounder.

Have almost 20,000km on them now and hardly worn. Maybe taken 3mm off them.

Can really recommend them.

Muddy

Savvas

I run the old style STT's with 25,000 hard kilometres on them.

No vibration problems, some lug chipping and some sidewall damage but that was mainly my doing. Started off with about 15mm tread and down to 10mm now. Have not had balancing probems either. Slightly noisy on the black top but just turn the music up :o)

Good offroad tyre in rocks and sand. Pretty average in mud.

I might go for Wrangler MTR next time.

Thanks guys ... I thought as much.

They were trying to talk me into Maxxis. So you can guess which tyre chain it was.

I have had Coopers for some time now. I just fitted some new ones to my Pajero this morning. The St's I pulled off, have 115,000kms on them, and I have had one puncture on sharp shale, on rear tyre, pulling a heavy trailer, and doing about 80kms/hr. NB.... My Fault.

As I said, I fitted the same tyres again, and have been extremely happy. I think that the retail tyre chains that sell BFG really do have an agenda. I deal with some of them frequently, through my work, and I can't remember the number of times they have bagged out Coopers. I did have a set of BFG At's, before the Coopers, and they were very good as well.
I stick with what I know to be good, and these last set of Coopers have worked out very well for me. I only changed from BFG because the Coopers were over $170.00 cheaper for the set.
If this current set differ in performance, I will be sure to let everyone know that as well.

I will post a photo of the tyres that I took off this morning, if anyone is interested.
They are still leagal. Anyone want to buy 5x cooper st's....... Slightly used???

In for a penny! I don't have Coopers and don't have an opinion of them ,but i am amazed how polarised the owners of these tyres are . Some luv em others hate em !!!!!! Here is my thought. Where are these made ? all in the USA or are some made in factorys elsewhere . I know with brands like Michelin the same tyres can be made in dozens of countrys, which begs the question is the quality consistant
eg. production spread. For the people that hate em check there country of origin.

This may be well clear of the mark but worth a check.

Cheers Dave L.

Hi Rigor..... The Cooper's are made in the USA by one manufacturer Cooper Tire and Rubber Co. There are 5 plants across the USA which produce the tyres and are all operated by Cooper Tire and Rubber Co.
All the Cooper Tires undergo over 200 quality control checks to make sure that the tyres measure up to there high standards. Cooper Tires are also well known for being the tyre with two names, in the building process the builder puts his or her personal identification on the tyre as a hallmark of Cooper craftsmanship. If you have any questions about Cooper Tires please call 1300 COOPER (1300 266 737).

Wouldn't be Bob Jane in Campbelltown would it? Every time I'm down there and pop in for a new BFG or Cooper ST, I get the same story. Guess what they have out the back which I always get the big sell on..... Maxxis.

The Coopers are great tyres. Don't listen.

How do you know who you can trust these days? Everyone seems to have an agenda that doesn't include their customers'....

Not the Campbelltown one.

They said that they were using the Maxxis on the Bob Jane fleet of 4WD's, but they didn't say much when I asked why the Bob Jane Rodeo out the front had brand new BFG AT's on it instead of the Maxxis.

Like the many other positive comments on this thread I too have had no problems with the ATR's. No vibration, great road holding in the wet and dry and value for money. I would thoroughly recomend these tyres to anyone looking for a all terrain tyre. Just make sure that you follow the warrenty proceedures of rotation and balancing then you won't have any future problems.
