Hi
I am just about to purchase a new LC 100 and would like some advice on repalcement tyres for the standard GrandTrek's. From my resreach - it seems that BFG AT's or Cooper AT's are the better choices. I mainly do highway (80/20)travelling, although whenever possible I will go off -road into sand, mud and on stoney , corrugated tracks. My intention is to travel up to the top-end and explore this great country. Given that they are both
well regarded and have a life of about 70 -80,000 km's when properly rotated and balanced (my current Paj DiD managed to get 70K + still another 10 - 15K left) I would like to hear from any LC owners about their choice of tyres. Also which of these two brands has the least road noise?
Many thanks
Tom

Thanks but the new LC comes with alloys as standard. I just want to exchange the not-so-good Dunlop tyres.
Cheers

Don't know about the Coopers, but I had BFG MTs on for over 100,000 km with no punctures or staking and over 30,000 of that was on outback dirt roads. Currently I have BFG ATs which have just passed 60,000 km with no punctures. Hope I haven't just jinxed myself (;>)

I had Cooper ATR's (not AT's) on my 100 series. They are a great tyre from my limited experience with them. Unfortunately I wrote the LC off so I can't comment on longevity.

Tom,
I have BFG AT's on my LC 100, and pretty happy with them. A little noise, only done about 8,000 but to date I am pretty happy and also cheaper than Coopers.
I kept my orginal tyres and bartered a spare set of 6 rims from the dealer for nothing and put the BFGs on these. I change them when I know that I am not going bush for a while.
I reckon I get better fuel economy from the original tyres.
Interesting to note that someone wants to get rid of the alloys.
I think here and elsewhere (4x4 Mag?), opinion has been that steel is best, does not crack.
Regards
Russ

Thanks Russ
I gather the original tyres are 17" GrandTreks?
My tyre dealer tells me there is a problem with fitting 17" BFG AT's because Toyota has changed the rating compliance on the new Cruiser (series 2 facelift models). It has changed from 112 to 115. He maintains that it would be illegal to fit 112 ( which was commonly done on the pre-facelift models).
Is your LC the new model or the pre-facelift version?
Cheers
Tom

Tom
Have american made BFG's on my LC100 IFS and have been extremely disappointed with them. At 42,000ks they are about ready to throw away. Tread has worn badly, tires have cut up badly despite relatively little off road use. Now chunks of tread block are falling off. Have contacted BFG but their rep has not replied 3 weeks later. I guess that suggests they are not that interested. See my post 27394.

What's wrong with the standard tyres? Think you are being a bit fussy!

To the Outback Iron Chef
Not fussy - if you only want to get to the
places where BBQ's sites are provided - that's fine. Me - I want to get away from the smoke and
cook my own meat surrounded by the natural surroudings of the bush.
