Mate works for toyota for the last 17 years reckons had no major faults with the prado motor or the hilux turbo diesel for that matter. Both great motors with great fuel economy, ok your not lugging the weight of a patrol or crusier but still very economical. (9/11 L per 100klms), not towing.Dont know the figures on the one's towing vans etc. Regards Vitara

Cruiser, at my previous employer we had 4 turbo diesel Prados which suffered from cracked heads. Replacement heads were required at considerable cost and time off the road. Not saying this is common or typical just that it is what happened. Three of them also has power steering problems also requiring replacement of steering boxes.
Vehicles were regul;arly serviced at a Toyo dealer so it was certainly not a case of neglecting to look after them.
I think you will find every vehicle manufacturer will say they "have no major faults with ....". This is a standard answer and cannot be believed. Try asking Nissan about their 3l motor. There is also no problem with IFS cruiser's diffs or suspension either is there, Discoveries never had a problem with their flywheels coming apart, etc etc.
Just my opinion.

Thanks for those replies. I know this motor is used in the Hilux as well, and have to say, I have not heard many negative reports on this motor at all.

My brother in-law is considering purchasing his first 4WD and is actually looking at a 3 Litre TD Patrol, and whilst I don't have any particular preference, I have heard of many problems with the earlier Patrol motors. I believe the later model Series III motors are now sorted out, however, I am going to suggest that he look at the Prado as well, so was just wondering if there was anything I should know before suggesting this to him.

Imported asian 1KZ-TE engines may have overheating problems.

Australian (& Middle East) delivered 1KZ-TE engines had slightly different head, and different radiator.

Other than that, just maintain them according to tha manual.

Happy with my 1KZ-TE engine after 170K Km, and the extra power I've managed to get (but maintain/improve economy).

BTW - the car is for sale :-( - end of lease
